Collaborative Learning in an Introductory Database Course: A Study with Think-Pair-Share and Team Peer Review

Published: 12 June 2022 Publication History

Abstract

The learning outcomes of introductory database courses are quite broad, encompassing very diverse abilities and skills. For increasing the effectiveness of learning w.r.t. the different skills and ensuring continuous engagement of students, we experimented cooperative methodologies throughout the course. Specifically, Think-Pair-Share (with adapted and tailored cycle times) was applied for both application exercises and hands-on laboratory activities, while we adopted team peer-reviews for the more complex final design activities. The paper describes and evaluates the intervention, in terms of student engagement, appreciation, and learning outcomes.
