Interaction process between changes in terms of time and space of pH value and the growth of marine organisms in the Jiaozhou Bay

Published: 09 December 2022 Publication History

Abstract

According to the research of Jiaozhou Bay seawater in May and October of 1979, this paper studied the changing process of the pH and the horizontal distribution of the bottom waters in Jiaozhou Bay. The bottom waters of Jiaozhou Bay is composed of the bottom waters of the inner side of the bay mouth + the bay mouth + the outer side of the bay mouth. The results showed that in May and October, the pH in the bottom waters of Jiaozhou Bay varied in the range of 7.88∼8.33. The pH of the seawater was greater than 7.80 from May to October. Moreover, the range length of pH change in seawater was 0.45. The results suggested that in terms of the changes of the pH, the pH of the whole bottom waters of Jiaozhou Bay was relatively high and the changes were relatively small in May and October. In May, the pH of the bottom waters of Jiaozhou Bay varied in the range of 7.88∼7.98 and the range length of the seawater pH changes was 0.10. In October, the pH of the bottom waters of Jiaozhou Bay varied in the range of 8.25∼8.33 and the range length of the seawater pH changes was 0.08. In respect of the change of time, from May to October, the seawater pH rose from being lower than 7.98 to higher than 8.25, and changed from being unfavorable for the growth of marine organisms to being favorable for their growth. The range length of the changes of the seawater pH decreased from 0.10 to 0.08, and the seawater pH became more stable which was favorable for the growth of marine organisms. In respect of the change of space, in the bottom waters inside and outside of the bay mouth, from May to October, the seawater pH rose from the low value 7.94∼7.98 to the high value of 8.25∼8.27, which changed from being unfavorable for the growth of marine organisms to being favorable for their growth. In the bottom waters of the mouth of Jiaozhou Bay, from May to October, the seawater pH rose from the minimum of 7.88 to the maximum of 8.33, changing from being unfavorable for the growth of marine organisms to being favorable for the growth. Therefore, in the bottom waters of the mouth of the bay, from May to October, the growth condition of marine organisms directly determined the changing process of the pH in terms of time and space: when the growth of the marine organisms was in bad condition, the seawater pH would drop, otherwise would rise.
