Affective state, self-esteem and technology: an exploratory study with children in hospital context

Abstract

Self-esteem is the assessment a person makes, and certainly maintains, about some aspects of himself/herself through emotional responses that she/he experiences, contemplates, and evaluates about these different aspects. Thus, as a person's affective state may be related to his/her level of self-esteem (positive affective states reflect high self-esteem and negative affective states are related to low self-esteem), this paper investigates the relationship between the concept and the use of contemporary technology. The affective states of some children with craniofacial deformities were analyzed while they interacted with a pervasive and ubiquitous computer system. The results presented and discussed were obtained along three workshops conducted with children in a hospital environment and were analyzed based on the affective categories of PANAS-X, a classic method used in the analysis of affective states. From the results obtained it was possible to establish relationships between the main affective states observed and some aspects of self-esteem, obtaining clues as to how technology can affect self-esteem and social relations between those involved.
