Data collection in heterogeneous wireless sensor networks

Published: 14 November 2012 Publication History

Abstract

Most existing routing protocols designed for WSNs assume that links are symmetric, which is in contradiction with what is observed in the real deployment. Indeed, many links in WSNs are asymmetric. Asymmetric links can dramatically decrease the performance of routing algorithms which are not designed to cope with them. In this paper, we propose two adaptations, A-RPL and A-Legos, respectively for RPL and Legos convergecast routing protocols to take into account the asymmetric links. The two protocols construct a logical topology over which the data will be sent in the network. This logical topology could be disconnected when asymmetric links are present in the network. We propose a new metric calculation for RPL protocol to take into account the asymmetric links. For A-Legos, we introduce two new states for nodes when asymmetric links are detected.
