Annotation architecture for mobile collaborative mapping

Published: 24 November 2008 Publication History

Abstract

This paper presents the Mobile Collaborative Annotation (MCA) framework, a client-server framework for revision based annotation that enables browser-based offline work and collaborative annotation. The capabilities of MCA are demonstrated by an application case study, Mobile Collaborative Mapping (MCM), an online map mashup that provides scientists, who require geographic information, with a simplified end-to-end mobile system. MCM is a form of mobile Geographic Information System (GIS), but targeted towards end-user customization. MCM extends the online map data model towards the GIS model, and introduces collaborative annotation and tagging to GIS. MCM is location-aware, facilitates offline editing and enables asynchronous synchronization in a collaborative environment.
