An architecture for personal semantic web information retrieval system

Published: 10 May 2005 Publication History

Abstract

The semantic Web and Web service technologies have provided both new possibilities and challenges to automatic information processing. There are a lot of researches on applying these new technologies into current personal Web information retrieval systems, but no research addresses the semantic issues from the whole life cycle and architecture point of view. Web services provide a new way for accessing Web resources, but until now, they have been managed separately from traditional Web contents resources. In this poster, we propose a conceptual architecture for a personal semantic Web information retrieval system. It incorporates semantic Web, Web services and multi-agent technologies to enable not only precise location of Web resources but also the automatic or semi-automatic integration of hybrid Web contents and Web services.

Web services provide a mechanism to access and integrate disparate Web resources. The semantic Web, on the other hand, provides a common framework for data sharing and reuse among disparate Web resources. This paper presents an interesting combination of these existing mechanisms to create the concept of a personal Web information retrieval system. The authors attempt to fill the void of existing information portals that provide limited semantic customization of the information being retrieved. The paper begins with the foundational design ideas behind the concept: the users will contribute the semantic description of the data by providing accurate meta-information, and the contents of various Web resources will be integrated using Web services. This will enable the end user to set personal preferences for the type of information he or she wants to retrieve. The capabilities of the Web site are described in the Web site capability description (WSCD). The myPortal layer consists of components that support information management, a common domain ontology, and a provider to allow information consumption by human and machines. The mediator layer consists of the consumer search agents (CSAs) and the provider search agents (PSAs). The CSAs are responsible for interacting with the interfaces in the myPortal layer to obtain user preferences and return the results. The PSAs are responsible for interacting with the Web resources that have been described in the WSCD. Although the architecture leverages existing technologies, a vast majority of the existing Web resources have not adopted semantic Web technologies like the resource description framework (RDF). This concept may not result in immediate changes to existing information portals; however, the success of the prototype may lead to a faster adoption of semantic Web technologies. The development of the actual prototype based on this architecture will reveal its effectiveness and shortcomings. This paper, and the others that will result from the prototype, can potentially provide insight into the development of the next generation of information retrieval systems.
