Abstract

Purpose

To examine the redesign of an academic archive and manuscript repository's fourth‐generation website.

Design/methodology/approach

A review of the process used by a task force to revamp a website, including determining the goals of the site, its main features, audiences, vendor and software selection, relationship to the parent institution's design guidelines, and user testing results.

Findings

Only with the cooperative effort of staff, interested outside parties, and users will web redesigns be worthwhile efforts that translate into sites with depth and meaning.

Originality/value

Article provides background information and analysis of a series of website redesigns.
