Abstract
Why is culture relevant in HCI? This chapter addresses this question by presenting some arguments for and against the importance of culture in HCI. Chapters 4 and 5 also address this question by presenting the main conceptual perspectives of culture within HCI and how this concept has been operationalized in the field.

Notes
- 1.
While other books, synthesis, and edited collections have addressed topics so important like usability and user experience (see, for example, this Synthesis Lectures on Human-Centered Informatics), the author is not aware of any that provides a synthesis of culture in HCI research. Publications that deal with approaches to address culture in HCI, and that examine research on culture across different periods and sources (journals/conference proceedings) have been conducted and are included in this synthesis. These individual works address particular aspects. This synthesis brings them together.
