Abstract:
The seed of the mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) has no distinct, visible embryo.
Nevertheless, when germinated in vitro each seed produced a shoot and a root.
These structures sprouted out from each end of the seed.
When seeds were cut into halves or many slices and placed in MS medium, generally one portion of the seed produced a shoot, while another portion produced a root.
These results suggested the existence of an “embryonic axis” in the seed.
When a slice of the seed was cultured in MS medium supplemented with 50 to 100 ppm benzyl adenine (BA) multiple shoots were produced on the explant.
The effects of BA and NAA on seed tissue are discussed.
