It's finished.
After switching between Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, Manjaro, Antergos and a dozen WM's I've settled for Arch on the desktop.
Took me over a week of trial and error, but it's worth the pain for the level of control you get.
Switching to Linux reminded me much of trying to find out if I liked text editors or IDE's more when I first started programming. I changed tools every day before I settled.
Screenshots of course. Now to actually get back to my JDBC projects before I start obsessing over how to get all my apps on the terminal. :D12 -
My Task: Create a new application in a custom C#-Framework, to replace screens from the old application.
Me:Fine.
The old application has a Java Frontend.
Me:Fine.
The old application has an Oracle-DB.
Me:Fine.
The old application has its logic fully on the DB.
Me:What ??
You cannot connect to the DB via ODBC.
Me:But why ???
You cannot use external libraries, just our framework.
Me: For what are you thinking i can use to call the functions on the DB
You have to use a custom connection-bus which uses JDBC
Me:Fine.
This connection-bus cannot call SQL Statements and return the result.
Me:WTF, how should i get the data out of the Database ?
We don't know find a way.
Me:Ahh fuck off.3 -
Hello DevRant! Time for my first rant. As the saying goes: Everyone should put his own house in order first. So why not rant about myself before i rant about others...
Dear past self next time be less an idiot and enter a database into the persistence.xml wich actually exisist so i don't waste a fucking hour or something like that, for looking what's wrong with my JDBC driver....
Learning something new can suck sometimes if you realize that you made a dumb mistake which prevents you from progress. -
Today is my last Live Coding Exam. Who The F̶u̶c̶k̶ Hug use jsp and mybatis-jdbc mysql connection anymore???!!!
Hugging Shit!4 -
Java. AGAIN. 😡
so, I am trying to get a csv opened and read, and then search through it based on values. Easy peasy lemon squeezy in python, right?
Well, damned be java. You need a buffered reader to read the file. Then you have to "while(has next)" the whole damn thing, then you have to do something with the data that you read one by one, right? Well, not to be disappointed, they do have json libraries, but you **have to install** the plugins for it. Aka you have to manually add the libraries or use some backwards manager like maven.
Gotta admit, jdbc is neat if you're anal about your sql statements, but bring the same jazz to csv, and all the hell will break loose.
Now, if you just read your json data into multiple objects and throw them in an array... Kiss shorthand search's ass goodbye, because this mofo can't search through lists without licking the arse of every object. And now, you have to find another way because this way, you can't group shit you just read from csv. (or, I haven't found a way after 5 hours of dealing with the godforsaken shitshow that java libraries are.)
Like, I'm devastated. If this rant doesn't make much sense to you, blame some java library for it.
Shouldn't be too hard.25 -
oh, I have a few mini-projects I'm proud of. Most of them are just handy utilities easing my BAU Dev/PerfEng/Ops life.
- bthread - multithreading for bash scripts: https://gitlab.com/netikras/bthread
- /dev/rant - a devRant client/device for Linux: https://gitlab.com/netikras/...
- JDBCUtil - a command-line utility to connect to any DB and run arbitrary queries using a JDBC driver: https://gitlab.com/netikras/...
- KubiCon - KuberneterInContainer - does what it says: runs kubernetes inside a container. Makes it super simple to define and extend k8s clusters in simple Dockerfiles: https://gitlab.com/netikras/KubICon
- ws2http - a stateful proxy server simplifying testing websockets - allows you to communicate with websockets using simple HTTP (think: curl, postman or even netcat (nc)): https://gitlab.com/netikras/ws2http -
Couldn't log in to my university campus website.
This is the error I got. :/
Better than "Something happened", I guess.2 -
To fetch 100 users at once, i used JPA hibernate findAll() method. Simple fucking enough. I realized this shit is slow. Takes a while to fetch and 100 records aint even a lot!
This shit needs over 265 ms to fetch 100 users
About 75 ms to fetch 20 users
That shits terrible!
Then i wrote a custom JDBC class with custom SQL queries to fetch the exact same shit.
Now it fetched 100 users in 7 ms, 37x times faster for performance
I havent even optimized indexing or did shit. I just avoided using jpa hibernate
Someone explain this to me8 -
Progress.
It isn't much, but the MVC application now reads data from the Linux LAMP server and prints the SQL data back to the client. Biggest hurdle was the fact that my Linux host blew up three times over the week, but hey, how else are you going to learn Linux servers?
Moving into spring framework self-education in July. Hopefully it's a little less painful than Apache Tomcat. -
Captains Log:
Day 2 of trying to get SQL database to work with JDBC application.
I've built a try/catch method and it throws up the message that IntelliJ can't find the JDBC driver.
More research to be done. My first officer duck buddy has no input for me.
It's going to be a long day.17 -
APIs, APIs, APIs... I feel like building an API for everything which goes over the wire is a must-have today! Yes it makes sense for decoupling purpose, access control etc (all the things we learned from OOP design principle books when we were in school) but come on, REST API for internal database access when there is something like SQL over JDBC/ODBC/WhateverBC ?? So I have to study the REST API documentation for applying simple where-statements but in API manner...4

how to describe the feeling when you started using sql and you had to get the first element from a table via jdbc...
you, obviously, think "oh, the first index is 0, every languages start at 0, so let's take the content at 0!!!" but the ide returns you "0 < 1"
so you don't understand, you stare the code for 20 mins, you start crying, and then you realize sql starts counting from 1 because it pretends to be cool BUT IT DOESN'T
I hate you, sql.5 -
IntelliJ, IntelliJ I love you but please tell me why making a jsp file from scratch doesn't work in the servlet but your template for a jsp does. It makes no fugging sense to me. StackOverflow doesn't know and I went there for help.
I was debugging that shit for 5 hours today over an issue that was fixed in 3 minutes. I need ice cream.2 -
As a total Javascript/node.js noob my biggest take from it this week is that it's a lighter version of the backend while doing a lot of the front end heavy lifting in a programmatic style. It's not a total replacement to ASP.NET MVC or JDBC MVC, it's nowhere near as powerful. But, I could see this being a very good replacement for JSP's and simplifying the front end. I need that because the front end terrifies me more than the backend. The devil you know is sometimes easier.
Still, my first week in node.js and Javascript has been... pleasent. It's simpler and less powerful than static or dynamic typed languages but that doesn't make it bad. 🙂
I am biased though. My first language was C++ and anything is easier/better than C++ 🤣 -
Flyway is bullshit. Genuinely who the FUCK finds this useful??? Why the Fuck do you want to have an ORM, next to a custom jdbc and to top it all off you also write custom sql queries in flyway just so you can prove your colleagues what db migrations happened WTF you can see that on git commits dumbass!!!! 3 different sql models that need to be the same but are written differently each. One through ORM, through code and through raw sql queries. Flyway just makes shit harder and having 1 change in model means i need to fuck myself with rewriting raw SQL queries in flyway WASTE OF TIME8

I swear I touched some weird and complex programming shit in over a decade of programming.
I interfaced myself through C# to C++ Firmware, I wrote Rfid antennas calibration and reading software with a crappy framework called OctaneSDK (seems easy until you have to know how radio signal math and ins and outs work to configure antennas for good performance), I wrote full blown, full stack enterprise web portals and applications.with most weird ass dbs since the era of JDBC, ODBC up to managed data access and entity framework, cloud documental databases and everything.
Please, please, please, PLEASE I BEG YOU, anyone, I don't even have the enough life force to pour into this, explain me why the hell Jest is still a thing in javascript testing.
I read on the site:
"Jest is a delightful JavaScript Testing Framework with a focus on simplicity."
Using jest doesn't feel any delightful and I can't see any spark of focus and simplicity in it.
I tried to configure it in an angular project and it's a clustefuck of your worst nightmares put togheter.
The amount of errors and problems and configurations I had to put up felt like setting up a clunky version of a rube goldberg's machine.
I had to uninstall karma/jasmine, creating config files floating around, configure project files and tell trough them to jest that he has to do path transformations because he can't read his own test files by itself and can't even read file dependencies and now it has a ton of errors importing dependencies.
Sure, it's focused on simplicity.
Moreover, the test are utter trash.
Hey launch this method and verify it's been launched 1 time.
Hey check if the page title is "x"
God, I hate js with passion since years, but every shit for js I put my hands on I always hope it will rehab its reputation to me, instead every fucking time it's worse than before. -
- load tests via web
- load tests via api
- figure out why the fuck hibernate started proxying Blob.class after migration rather than using jdbc implementation, like before
- fix ^^
- reconfigure tomcat to ditch random for urandom completely [still getting econnreset]
- continue conversation with sysadmin, tester, analyst, 2 PMs, infra architect, junior dev
- provide immediate support for analyst and tester as soon as they need it
- provide support to another dev on another project
and that's my today's todo list. I think I need more personalities [more threads] to keep going -
Getting REALLY sick of OpenShift right now >:( I'm trying to connect to my database with JDBC (using Java servlets and JSP pages) for an assignment, but it doesn't seem to be acknowledging the presence of any of the environment variables. Or it's refusing to save values to the session, I can't really tell. But I've been trying to figure this out for several hours a night the last three nights, and it's still doing nothing1
-
And now I'm gonna use my entire day to restructure. an application (Built in Java with swing and jdbc to connect to mysql ),and instead use Java with sqlite and swing1

Question for java masters, can you please show me the java mastering degrees
Example : Java, Java Gui, Java Jdbc .....
Thank you7 -
Why is my Spark Dataframe getting written as empty in the database table when deleting records? There’s no problem when inserting records, and I I have verified that my Spark Dataframe is not empty when trying to rewrite using Overwrite method. Then why is my whole table data getting deleted when I’m just trying to remove a few records using left_anti join?1
