Worst dev advice?
My first manager said, "You're young and single. You don't have a family. You should spend all of your waking hours on work."
Me thinking, "I understand the importance of extra effort the first few years but I do have a life. One that I intend to enjoy."15 -
Today I had a reflection with an client and they surprised me with a present. They wanted to thank me for the hard work and effort I made.
Wauw! It just keeps me motivating to work hard and keep my clients happy!4 -
Working 160 hours of overtime in one month in order to help out our biggest client, and getting told only afterwards that company policy limits overtime compensation to 40 hours a month... My boss saw how much effort I was putting in, and could have warned me, but no...18
-
So a client wanted me to work on a 6 month project for just 300$. Some people really need to learn the value of time and effort18
-
So guess what my little sister got me for my birthday! She actually made an effort to make this cute gift. Maybe in the future I will buy the original one and then I'll have two :319
-
If you are copy pasting code from somewhere else, spend some time and effort to understand what that piece of code is actually doing, and how much of your requirement does it satisfy.1
-
fuck web designers who give 0 effort for design to be coding friendly. and then want the page to be responsive. GO FUCKURSELF.3
-
Not ++’ing a rant because double tapping / dragging the finger all the way to the side of the screen to the ++ button required too much effort.3
-
Today I officially switched from 5 working days per week to just 4 days. It will be less money, but much more freedom & happiness.
I'm a lucky guy to have this opportunity, but I also put my big chunk of effort to achieve this degree of freedom. And I'm proud for that.11 -
There have been so many low quality posts lately, ugh. They’re almost all poor attempts at humor in a pathetic grab for internet points, and many showcase a distinct lack of understanding.
Where are the rants?
Where is the competence?
Where is the anger?
Where is the rage?
... Where is the effort?31 -
The fact you’re older doesn’t give you the right to call other people’s 8-months’ engineering effort “shit work”, especially if you didn’t even see the code...
Sincerely,
Your tech lead - me :)4 -
!rant
Just pushed commit #512 today.
Was a huge refactoring effort which went sooooo smoothly <3
Pull from parent branch without merge conflicts <33
No issues with deployment <333
AND i'm now on vacation 🏳️🌈❤️🏳️🌈❤️🏳️🌈
Things are perfect6 -
I had a professor, in college that believed "sometimes we have to fire customers. There are bad customers and it serves no purpose to spend time and effort in serving them when they burn you out and are simply bad customers" and I share that vision.
-
So, more people = more effective?
Let's see how you can deliver a baby with 9 women with only 1 month
P. S:Good luck with that!!6 -
Client: We need video chatting facility in our website
Me: Ok. But it will take more time and effort. It will cost you more too!
Client: Don't build from scratch. We use Skype in our company. Just embed in our website too!
Me: **facepalm**5 -
Am I the only one who, while in public, subconsciously look at what users are doing on their phones in effort to better understand the species known as "user"?6
-
My last girlfriend was a Linked List. It was easy to get head but getting tail required serious effort.3
-
Task:
- Replace a 4 year old PHP API.
Old API:
- PHP script writing PHP scripts to /var/www/ for every endpoint needed
- Answers everthing with 200 (not even 404)
DB:
- MySQL 5.6
- ~ 1000 Tables, NO FUCKING FK's
Documentation:
- "Wasn't worth the effort"
New API:
- Not allowed to behave any different

An old conversation with a former Team Lead (TL)
TL: The client has requested for a feature. Can you provide an effort estimation.
(gives estimation with task breakdown)
TL: 2 weeks? They wants it in 3 days!
Me: -
I applaud my coworker who titled the business analytics dashboard showing end user feedback and CES values projected onto the 6 meter high wall of the office lobby.
"International Normalized Customer Effort Score Tracker"9 -
I often hear
You will be promoted as lead if you act like it or take charge
That is really stupid, there is difference between responsibly and effort.
Why would i put effort for things that i am not getting paid for ?
Fuck that6 -
I hate social functions.
Have to shave of my months long beard and dress up like a gentleman, too much effort imo.5 -
Pretending to have a hard deadline if I don't have one. Gotta trick my brain in putting some effort into it.3

My apprentice quit!
Posted the other day about him quitting ...
He did ( he could of read the old post )
Just took him two days to do it
Worst fucking thing he fell asleep this morning on his way to work , so he's late anyway 9 start time actually arrives 9:40 .... ! Normally today it was 10:50 till he arrived... On a day he quits
Now he expects me to pay him extra money .... Holiday days etc ...
I want an apprentice who wants to be good at software 😐
Thing is he said it's not what he wants , I think development is something you learn to love.. because of the challenges. You always when starting out facing huge brick walls you have to get through.
Some people just don't have the capacity to get through them. I think. Developer has to love the difficulty .. you fail multiple times before the finished product ... All the errors. Little fixes no one sees.
It takes dedication.... Hard work to be the best. He didn't get that.
I now have more respect for other devs ( I had a lot already ) knowing that we all went through all of that and now. We are people with true talents.3 -
Dev: What are the requirements?
Client: I want to make my boss happy so that I get lots of money and promotions.
Dev: What does your boss want?
Client: He wants to be happy
Dev: …
Client: Also I don’t want to expend any effort or resources to achieve this
Dev: …4 -
Co-worker: "I made the UI for feature X you asked me for"
Me: "Oh great tha... Why is it on the same screen as feature Y? Those features are unrelated?"
Co-worker: "Yea it was too much effort to create a new screen."
Me: "...?!?"1 -
Any eyedropper tool on linux that works in 2 click or shortest amount possible? Like instant eye dropper tool on windows, I don’t need stupid pallete on the color picker, I just want to grab the color asap with little effort18
-
Super exited! Been thinking for a while now about getting back to software development (worked couple year as dev in my teens decade ago and since then have been in completely different field of work).
Finally made some effort towards my goal and applied for a position nearby.
After four rounds of interviews and tests, I got the job! Awesome!2 -
Y'all need to chill!
**DO NOT** downvote a newbie's post without telling them why. It may sound like a spam to you, but it's someone's best effort at an icebreaker joke. 😠56 -
"yes, a university degree isn't necessary to become successful, but that doesn't mean you can waste your time playing games or watching youtube for half a day.
stop complaining about the system and get your ass to work. do something, anything. stop fucking around with your life."
...is what i told a friend and he hasn't messaged me for 2 weeks. i see him on discord all the time, playing runescape or some shit.
i'm 24 and he's 22. he dropped out because he was too lazy to go to uni every 2 days.5 -
Look, icon pack. We need to talk about devRant. You're getting to that age where you need to be respectful, especially towards such a wonderful app. Could you maybe go to the effort of having some icon, even if it's just a simple one? Thanks.3
-
The WP Gutenberg editor is really amazing. Clients can now fuck up their websites with much less effort. So yeah, IT IS FASTER.8
-
"Hey what's your opinion on this idea?"
I think it's a huge waste of time and effort. Why not use this simpler solution?
"Nah let's do this."
Then why the fuck did you even ask?2 -
y'know, if your coworkers annoy the shit out of you, sometimes it's worth looking at how the company is treating them.
a lot of what i have to deal with spans from an environment that demands speed at the expense of quality and won't reward developers for their effort, cause they simply don't understand the effort it takes. we have a tiny team responsible for a nation wide program, and people are just shocked when they hear this, because the work we do is in fact amazing for a group of 5. everyone is just tired, overworked and badly recompensed for it. this shit will hit the fan pretty soon5 -
Relationships and gaming on Linux have a lot in common. When it works, it's glorious, though it has its quirks. When it doesn't... You let it drive you mad until you decide that the compatibility issues just aren't worth the effort anymore.1
-
I get really defiant when i repeatedly get micromanaged with bullshit instructions, such as asking me to have my just started c++ library poc which also involves a lot of learning and will earliest be usable in a few months, "ready for our customer devs" in 2 weeks from now.
just no, you fucking retard.
also, the lib alone wouldn't make any sense, since the code parts working with it don't yet exist at all.
and then getting instructed to ask customers if they can provide you with c++ code that solves the task for them in their own software, which of course will somehow magically fit in my existing codebase. even if it existed (which it fortunately doesn't because they do everything in C#), i don't think i'm going to be faster trying to somehow solder in their code into my library, of which i'm still brainstorming about the general architecture.
if you have so fucking unrealistic expectations, maybe stop sniffing glue all day and don't make this my fucking problem.3 -
I love my relationship with the front end team:
—Hey, you have a minute? I need help with some of the endpoints you've created.
—Sure, what's up?
—Nevermind I figure it out.
Solving problems without effort. That's what I call efficiency.5 -
Saw a job opening that had under the duties: “Willing to put in extra effort…”. What is that supposed to mean? X job should take Y effort, and an appropriate amount of compensation for that effort. Why does the job require “extra” effort? I read that as; tons of unpaid overtime. Hard pass.6
-
"Back in the days, you had to put a lot if effort into getting WiFi working in Linux.
Today, you can take a Linux notebook, slam it into its dockingstation with all kinds of peripherals attached to it, and it just works"
~ my boss9 -
After dropping my c++ book, I just gifted my python book to a store keeper, in the hope that one day may be her twelve year son will become one of us, a programmer.
-
Not biting off the head of my incompetent manager.
Genuinely took a lot of effort. Partially the reason why I have depression. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -
That feel when someone answered your stackoverflow question and you accept, but a minute later someone posts a more detailed answer that obviously took a lot of effort 😐1
-
"how did you make that app?"
"nice website, how'd you make it?"
"I thought only geniuses could make x? how'd you make x?"
maybe because I put in half a fucking ounce of effort into making it. please kindly shut the fuck up and realize that I don't care enough to tell you how I did it, because it would take more fucking effort to tell you than to walk away (surprise?). no I will not take your idea in consideration. why? because it's not worth fucking considering. go fuck yourself. and don't ask me the same thing tomorrow you cunt.6 -
Taking care of your skin once a week, won't give you better skin.
Just like eating a healthy meal once a week, won't make you skinny.
Changes and improvements take time, effort, but most of all consistency.3 -
Wanna know why Windows sucks so much? It's because of the Windows users. No, really!
Windows user: But but but I can't switch away from Windows because MIMIMI!
Microsoft: Ah, is that so? Then why should we even try to make (and pay for) an effort?5 -
Conspiracy Theory:
Coding standards were invented so that your colleagues can steal your code without any effort.6 -
People at Apple must have put an enormous amount of time and effort into the development of iOS 11. It's impossible to make an OS so fucking buggy and shitty as 11 without spending a lot of time on it to purposely make it crap.5
-
"Writing good code is a charity". ( - saves time, effort, mental-health, & career of next developer).5

When my boss acknowledged my effort in creating an in house scripting language. Makes me feel really really proud! 😁9

When an application is nearly complete and suddenly there is a recommendation thrown from management to change a technical specifications . Which will change the whole cycle effort meaningless. How does that feel?! Getting it now.

Me: "It's a balance between three things: you either optimize for computation, memory use, or programming effort. Computers don't have a infinitely fast processors with an infinite amount of memory."
Coworker: "Did anybody tell Java?"3 -
Somebody please kill Pinterest!
Pinterest is a cancer that has turned searching by image into a pointless effort. If you search by image, you want to discover the image's original source. Instead you get 1000 Pinterest boards with the image in it.5 -
Finally dumped windows from my tower/gaming rig!!!
I'm now running Ubuntu Budgie and Windows 10 inside a qemu/kvm VM with gpu passthrough. That way I have almost-native performance and no additional setup effort for installing games.7 -
when a project manager asks for an effort calculation due to changed requirements, but the calculation itself takes longer than the implementation would...
-
> Tells client, if content isn't hosted on their server somewhere, we'll have to update the app every time they need new content
> Client refuses saying it will take too much time and effort to maintain
*Several weeks later*
> Get email from client asking to update the app because content is out of date
> I want to reply with 'Sorry no can do, it will take too much time and effort to maintain'8 -
I spent four days doing a rewrite for a possible performance boost that yielded nothing.
I spent an hour this morning implementing something that boosted parsing of massive files by 22% and eliminated memory allocations during parsing.
Work effort does not translate into gains.17 -
God bless being a student. I just moved a massive calculation to uni's jupyter servers. Saved me from a shitton of effort and burning my laptop down. 🙏

This is so true. I agree no one will slow down and put in the effort to make lasting stuff or it is rare.

The best part of being a dev is that no matter how long you take to solve a problem, you know that even after a whole night of solving issues it will be worth the effort because you will deliver a functional product and there is no best feeling.2
-
Agile Coach: you need to take part in the next quarter planning of the work. Work with your business team to create a healthy backlog. Provide your input to the user stories. It’s a collective effort.
Me: why tf it’s not a collective effort when code breaks and only one dev is trying to fix it while taking in all the heat.
Of course I can’t say that out loud without getting fired.4 -
On A privacy research focused Hackaton, my team lead got up, and said:
Our group is going to look at porn sites privacy issues! and @magicMirror is going to lead that effort!
And went on to say Porn+@magicMirror in every sentence. Very loudly.

Last Sunday, we deployed 300 major application/service configuration changes, 60+ load balancer changes, DNS cutovers, changes to mission critical SQL servers, and informatica connection changes. This impacted every line of business, all customer facing apps, and all internal apps.
6 days from DEV to PROD, which includes all developer effort.
Deployment succesful!3 -
Let's split joke and meme into two different categories so that we can have shitty memes under one tag and (hopefully OC) jokes in the other. Then we could filter out low effort memes and still get the occasion joke. We need jokes.3
-
did all the work and showed it to client . a person came and did just formating/ui , even values were populated by me .
Now he is the one who did everything. even client appreciated his effort of 4 hours.
Fuck this company.2 -
Overhearing your boss pitch the application you're currently working on to a client as an effort to save them from leaving, only to also hear him list features that were never discussed as part of the application launch.1
-
"Minor edit"?
Why do clients always have to try and quantify the amount of effort a task is going to take while having no clue as the actual work it is going to take?
MINOR EDIT!
I bet to them changing a fundamental law of the universe would be a "minor edit"5 -
My CTO strongly discourages working from home because he insists that "leaning over to the next cube to ask a question" is far better than sending a message, email or making a phone call. He went as far as saying it takes too much effort to do the latter... How is interesting someone while they're working more efficient???10
-
Have you ever been at at that magical point where you have to decide if it's worth putting the effort in to understand the legacy code, or just delete it all and start again?2
-
Things that piss me off in github issue comments:
- "halp it doesn't work!!!" no description, no steps to reproduce, nothing.
- people writing comments in a random ass language that nobody understands so everybody except them has to go through the effort of translating it.
- issue comments that escalate into a meme fest because the issue was linked on reddit or some other platform -

I want to say to my cheating whore of an ex, you were never worth the time nor the effort. You are my only regret in life. There are actually way more pretty and nice and probably honest girls than you'll ever be!30 -
when someone tries to wrap their MIDI in 3 layers of crypto to distribute it without allowing access but they used ZipCrypto on a file format with a 14 byte header where only 4 bytes change3

!rant, probably, even though kind of yes, but not overt
i just realized something: software doesn't take lot of effort and time to change because it would be difficult to make a change.
it takes lot of effort and time to change because making the change is easy, but inspecting and debugging what other things the change affects takes most of the time and effort.
it would be nice if project managers were able to wrap their head around this.
tl;dr i can make the change right now in 5 minutes, but it's going to take me an hour to check if me changing that didn't break something else.8 -
Today me started to come to college by wakeuping at 10@m to attend DAA class by 1pm a strict warning to all to attend by sharp 1'o clock but at the scene my madam is absent and my effort gone wrong😢😢😢(Computer Science)6

me: Hey. This looks like a cool component that will save me lots of time and effort in the project I'm kicking off next week.
/* Two months later */
me: WTF was the name of that component that did that thing?
======================
I really should write things down more often.1 -
When you put a lot of time and effort into writing intricate code, and after a lot of work, the finished project is a beutiful creation.3

haha funny
Made by me, the inspiration came after I actually almost wrote a console.log while debugging, it had been a long time since I last touched Java.7 -
Hello guys. Today I bring you my list of top 3 programs that use too much memory
🪟 Windows 10+
⚛️ Web browsers, Electron
🐋 Docker containers
Honorable mention: ☕Java
The developers of those programs should put more effort into optimizing memory usage14 -
Wanna know how to piss off an entire dev team?
Agree that progressive isn't good enough, must be native.
And supporting ie7 & 8 won't take much extra time or effort...2 -
Stackoverflow started 8 years ago.
Is there no hope for us "noobs" to ever see the 'k' at the end of our points?
All these 100K + users and i'm over here rejoicing in the 48 points that I was able to muster up with some effort T-T7 -
When the work isn't as interesting as I'd like, sometimes I accomplish the easiest, smallest incremental task and waste time the rest of the day.
I guess because it feels like work, I'd rather apply minimal effort. It's a bad habit, and one I'm trying to break. -
Helped somebody learning Arduino (he is new to programming in general)...
I saw this at the top of his file...
I admire his effort tho...13 -
Four freaking crypto recovery ads on this platform today. They do spend effort in it, still it's full of typos. So retards that work hard? What would the scam be? I'm very interested if those guys actually make money4
-
i think formal education is the best, because it teaches good practices and all the whys of programming. it requires a lot of discipline and effort, but actually sitting down and studying theory is good for us13
-
Always double your level of effort estimates to any management over what it's really going to take. Always.2
-
Feels so fucking good to see that your effort and talent finally paid off. I FUCKING LOVE THE FEELING! 🙋🙋🙋
-
I really like to help people with programming related issues/questions if they are stuck after research. BUT PLEASE FOR FUCKS SAKE LEARN HOW TO PROPERLY DESCRIBE YOUR ERROR/PROBLEM. "Doesn't work" is not helpful at all an shows no effort was taken to try to figure out the problem yourself. FUCK YOU.2
-
Thanks drox & trogus for the time and effort you Guys put into this place to keep it awesome. Also thanks for the Stickers :)5

It has given me a great understanding of how important perfection is. At school everyone said, "you spend too much time perfecting everything" or "spread your* effort, rather than spending lots of time on one thing and rushing another." But now, in programming, knowing where to put the time and effort is the most useful skill I could ever need.
Also, I can barely use the mouse correctly anymore, except when playing video games.
*Here, my Google Keyboard suggested: legs, wings, Marmite. 😕1 -
Turns out getting users to put in literally any effort to do something ends up in them putting in zero effort and just not bothering. Users suck.2
-
Brothers and sisters I have ascended
From my early chilidhood I was taught by my parents & society that I should put effort into doing things that I "MUST", be kind and polite to others
Tis' all bullshit; never lift a finger if you do not feel like it; never help people free of charge; if you dislike a particular undertaking then it is not worth even an ounce of effort.
We live in a society.12 -
Me: *holy shit there's a lot of code in this template file, I should probably break it up I to components*
*goes through the effort to break everything up into component parts*
Me: *i should quit being lazy and actually register all my templates the way magento wants me to*
*5 hrs later*
Me: fuck this! *<?php include ...?>*1 -
Thanks google, I don't think I will forget to try them
Had to scroll for half a minute to find something I didn't already have1 -
It takes so much effort to put a quality video on YouTube.
1. Researching
2. Scripting
3. Recording ( screen record while doing the hands on of the topic, drawing concepts on whiteboard + voice over )
4. Editing
5. Thumbnail
Then upload.3 -

Seeing someone this fucking dense is physically frustrating even when I'm not involved3 -
A manager in the area, in an effort to “encourage” teams to meet their externally generated commitments before imposing mandatory extended hours, posted a chart showing Mt. Everest with weekly goals as stages up the mountain. First team to the top wins a $20 gift card. Looks just like this picture. Results will probably be similar.4
-
So an app I use for real-time train schedules broke last week and the official app is really slow, UI is bloated/bad devs.
I figured out the HTTP calls so started writing my own, spent 2 days and basic functionality works but...
Now the other app is working again...
Feels like wasted effort now :(2 -
Our new potential customer requires us to have <Feature>.
Can you implement <Feature> before your vacation? We'd like to roll it out while you're away.
<Feature> has been in discussion since 2018, our competitors developed it for years while we deemed it too much effort, my vacation starts next week and it is fucking Wednesday.1 -
"Manual testing is often quick and easy and satisfying – you can directly test your application, one can see the results immediately on your screen, and one can interact with the application “for real”, instead of in the sometimes-awkward scripted/mocked mode of unit tests. It’s a very natural instinct.
However, it’s also largely-wasted effort! A manual test only verifies the current state of the code base. As soon as you make a change, you’ve started to invalidate the results. If, however, you take the effort to encode the test in code as an automated test, it continues to be valid indefinitely into the future."

1. God Complex
2. You can get things done with little effort. ( script or program that does personal computer chores for me, etc..)
3. Lots of $$$ opportunities if you are able to get some clients. -
I really do wish that Apple would put some more effort into their update screen.
Just having a progress bar that crawls along at an agonising pace isn't useful, in fact it makes the process feel longer than it is.
Give us some feedback as to what is going on, even Windows and Linux managed that.1 -

Is there any other place in this world besides Switzerland where you get a fucking fine of ~ $40 for driving ONE bloody km/h too fast??? It’s about 0.7mph.. (after subtracting tolerance to be fair)
In other countries I drive they wouldn’t fine at all because it’s not worth the effort..1 -
The technical incompentency of the people I try to help with their tech problems, is utterly astounding. Especially family members. For the love of God, if somebody is offering you tech support, put in at least some minimal degree of effort!

I think I need vacation because communicating with non tech/code savy people requires an effort..1 -

when a brand (literally any social media) doesnt provide a clear answer to "what are your brands colors?"

Man, I love how G++ (and every other Gnu tool for that matter) makes 0 effort to understand what you fucked up, and they only tell you where they got stuck. What am I supposed to do with this error that doesn't contain a single reference to my project?7

If you ever get a chance to refactor a 5/6 years old code , just do it .
Dont loose hope , you'll eventually have a great time .
Its totally worth the effort and time . I learnt so many things. (still in the proccess)5 -
The first time I've used JPA and Lombok annotations and suddenly didn't have to bother about getters and setters anymore and pretty much persisted my whole data tables with no effort.
Total game changer for me. -
I forgot how much effort job applications were. Like, just writing a cv is a lot of effort, then some companies want a cv and then answer some interview style questions too 🙄3

Ich asked a customer if he would like to have a specific feature. He answered me if this feature greatly increases the effort then he would like to have it.3

Late night kaggle session, and I'm enjoying how cute and clean this dataset is!
I'm jealous if data scientists always get to work with such neat sets! Dude! I got .95 acc without any effort! This is so... Weird. 🤔4 -
Would you make an effort to make something like Peacefare? An app where you feed virtually homeless people virtual food?4

Google Play's latest update is an epitomy of what we are as a society. You're too lazy to navigate deeper, you dumbf**ks. You're wasting my navigation dev effort. /s5

The ratio of time spent reading versus writing is well over 10 to 1. We are constantly reading old code as part of the effort to write new code

Got so fed up, ended up getting a hosted one at Digital Ocean.8 -

Brainfog.
The state of wanting to practice coding, work on side project, or just try to understand github. However, your brain is running at dial-up speed and it feels like it takes too much effort to do so.

Take a few seconds to reflect on the insane amount of human time and effort that goes into making development bearable or just possible on Windows.
A few examples: bash (MINGW & MSYS), make, symlinks, docker (docker-toolbox, WSL), Apache (W/X/LAMP)1 -
I just remembered that 2 years ago I found an open-redirect vulnerability in one of Google's old pages.
I decided to not submit it to Google because it's too much effort (even though I knew they pay for these things) and told about it to a friend who deals with these things.
I was SO. DAMN. STUPID.1 -
When your project has no unit tests and you just accept that it's non testable anyway. Especially because the company won't put any effort into making a test environment for it.1

Yes you are. Not a single reason. Clearly no one. I am very surprised. This recruiter put in some very subtle irony and lots of effort (google "minutes in an hour")3

It's awesome when one of your favorite apps removes one of your most used features!
Edit: Jk the feature's still there, just buried in a menu making it almost not worth the effort to use the feature.

When I read, I found that I like to jumping or really need to understand individual words. Very slow and low comprehension. put lots of effort in school, still at bottom. Reading this book, I found that mild dyslexia may be the issue. Or something similar.1

So recently I've been getting a bit tired of my countrie's slow and outdated-ass politics combined with the old-ass leadership.
I make an effort to come over as a liberal in public when I'm under people but sometimes..sometimes it's getting a bit hard.8 -
So thought I would install Visual Studio 2017 for Mac and ho boy what a load of shit that is!
They say it's designed to be macOS styled yet it is literally the same visual style and element location to mono-develop for linux and mac, piss poor effort when even creating new project uses the same form layout.2 -
When you give a basic touch of modern design to a README and critize their replies they end the conversation with
'locked and limited conversation to collaborators'
'We appreciate the effort'
Sure doesn't look like it.
'X is highly specialized software'
Like most other software? And?
'The docs are fairly out of date, and need a complete rewrite, not this kind of graphical adjustment, so it would do more harm than good to present information of how to run this application in a secondary page along with random outdated info.'
So you are too lazy to update them, probably won't for a long time and have a problem with updating the outdated information's design despite that not actually changing the situation.
Disregarding the fact that the 'graphical adjustment' work even if you update the content.
Got it, right.36 -
Teachers. We put so much effort in learning, I think it's only fair that you know what you teach. You are supposed to simplify our learning process not make it worse. We don't need a lecture hour to read your ppts.1

Manager does nothing but give me more work. Can't code. doesn't even get git issues. Last in first out yet I'm first in last out. At end of meeting he says, "great job but one comment, you should say 'We' not 'I', cuz this is a team effort"
Are you fucking kidding me dude? Add it as another issue.... Oh wait -
If you have any project (personal or not, doesn't matter) that does not have proper code comments and documentation and you don't want to make one because of the effort (maybe even "wasted" effort), think again. When commenting on a wall of code to say what it does, you may find a better way of doing what you have to do, possibly increasing performance, or improving security.
I have been able to do better input sanitization for a method on a personal project of mine because of this.
Don't use the amount of effort for proper documentation as an excuse not to make one.2 -
Does that look like a bug ? Or a feature ? It requires a considerable amount of time and effort to develop unattended remote access. How do these people develop such a feature as "mistake".5
-
Procrastinates, wastes time not working; hates himself
Works on a regular schedule, putting in effort and feeling sleep deprived;
Hates himself even more.
Inner self hatred realises something.
Who said my self-loathing was bad for me??? -
Lesson 1 of developing a project with managers: never make it known that solutions to some bugs are simple. Managers will assume that all bugs are simple and require little thought and effort. Then, when there is a bug for which you have no idea what the solution is just by looking at the issue, they will become upset.2

I know. I have posted a lot of images of my desktop earlier. They looked really good but something similiar could be made by a monkey. What i mean by that is i didnt put much effort into them.
This time i decided to start over and make a new desktop and actually put some effort into it. So here it is.1 -
I have a dream that one day the sales people will consult with a developer on time and effort estimates before making ridiculous promises to the client.5

pixlr has shown me that in all aspects, you learn more about something that dosen't just spit a product out for you with you only putting in like 2% effort2

Adding noip.com to the list of services that accept more passwords for signup than for logging in. Damnit how does software even get to that point. Isn't it, like, more effort to get this wrong than to get it right?

Applying for an entry level software job and having the "let's do a hackathon" project. Unpopular opinion:
I often hear that an advantage of PWAs is that porting them to desktop / mobile requires little or none effort. IMO desktop and mobile apps fundamentally differ in the way we use them, so that building 2 versions of an application often seems easier to me.10 -
"It takes A and B and C and X and ... to make this work on Windows"
What? Nooo really? Making Linux tools work on Windows takes more effort than on Linux? And it must totally be Windows' fault, right?
Pull your head out of the ass already. Running Windows tools on Linux takes just as much effort and just as many extra steps, and the same goes whenever you try to run any software on a system it wasn't made for.18 -
Even if the solution is working, does not mean it is the correct and way of doing it. One can save a lot of time and effort by learning from others instead of sticking to his/her ego.

I've been working on a side project for a while(many months) and I'm at my 3rd refactoring and concluded that the greater service I want to achieve the more complex the project become, nothing exceptional, except I feel like doing the effort of an entire team of software developers.

Oh, here's an environment variable that needs to be set in order to work, not mentioned at all in the documentation, only found when your CI/CD fails, blah blah blah i'm an ignorant human who doesn't give a shit enough or have enough pride in my job to write proper documentation

F the people who think more rules and regulations are answers to the current problems. You know why your businesses are shutting down, taking jobs with them and moving elsewhere?
Because too many complicated tax laws. Why put effort when countries like Singapore, Estonia are doing a much better job.36 -
We had almost finished integration of debit card depositing for our application.
Yesterday, the clients told us they signed a contract with a new provider.
This is after telling us they'd signed the contract with the previous provider, but as it turns out, that's a lie.
So we have to scrap the entirety of the last 8 days work because the new provider is a shareholder in the client's company now.
The new provider doesn't have an SDK for our language, and what they do have is XML.
It's time to parse, I guess. -
Not a rant, but a concern: should I make a bigger effort to take my picture off as many public places as possible on the Internet? I already use avatars for FB and Twitter profile pictures (share photos only in private). Or am I being paranoid? What do you do about it?7

Folks at my organisation say they can't recode our product based on a newer technology as they aren't comfortable with it and yes, it would apparently take much time and effort.
I think you should look out for better and newer technology out there that might improve your product and not worry about the effort it takes to migrate.
Thoughts?3 -
I feel like most of the problems people are ranting about would never happen if they worked in a proper environment with lint checks, unit tests, e2e tests etc.
It's worth the effort to get it!4 -

Me: Yay! I’m getting more clients which means more income which means my accountant won’t look at me funny anymore when I say I’m still running a business and not a hobby! Go me!
Also me: I need $1400 worth of project management software subscription for 2 years (to get a discount) so I can manage the Agile workload among the developers and writers. I also need to recover $700 of accidental ad spend for that stupid Yelp account I forgot I had a “free trial” on. Guess I’m still running a hobby for a bit.1 -
I recently performed a huge refactoring effort on a Java project converting both the persistence and utility layers to Kotlin. Gotta say, I think I'm starting to fall in love with programming again!
Putting aside how pretty it is now, I've reduced those two layers by over 2400 lines of code -
Am I reasonable rejecting a job which is about building an accounts interface system which will interface with different services build with different technologies and manage the accounts, all in Visual Basic?

ChatGPT is blocked in my country, I had to get creative to finally create an account but holy shit it was worth the effort. That thing is freaking fast and I am honestly a bit worried about how these technologies will evolve in the future. Well time to make my boy GPT write me some code 🤪12

Why is apple so uncooperative?! Just tried to add their event to my google calendar and guess what, they haven't put any effort to make it easy.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has made it lot more easier not just on google calendar but even on Yahoo's.
Little things like this speak a lot about the company and their culture.4 -
someone gets in my Discord server, asks "can anyone download a file for me? DM me" in the bot trap, and leaves.
Is it worth the effort of trying to track this guy down so I can get new malware or is it not worth the risk of CP?4 -
Sharing code between IPTs is fun and definitely reduces risk and level of effort. And if I say it often enough it will become true.

I fix a problem, someone slightly higher up ( but not my boss ) sees me doing it and decides he needs to show me a better way and scold me on my way. I'm left saying to myself, but my way required less effort and I had FINISHED FIXING IT BEFORE YOU GOT YOUR HANDS ON IT1

If you're working on integrating a 3rd party app, never trust their docs to be fool-proof. Not only are they erroneous, they keep changing too. Better try it and ask questions on their forums, even if it involves a little more effort and time.

To not be too emotionally attached to stuff. At the end of the day, all good things come to an end. Also, not to be 100% loyal. That could squeeze more effort out of you at the cost of your efficiency. Have a life, live it.

I need help.
Since few days I've been thinking to go for cross platform app development. I've heard some names like Xamarin, Flutter & React Native. But I'm confused in choosing one of them. Below are few things I've read about them.
Xamarin is more like native, but It needs more effort to make it cross platform.
Flutter is still in beta, but Its backed by google, So it can be future. + it has performance issues and it lacks many important libs.
React native uses Javascript. and It's kinda less native.
So, I'm confused to choose in of them. I need to choose the one with many libraries and is good at performance, and it must have less effort for making it for another platform.10 -
This is from riot.im on my phone in Chrome. Somehow the rest of the site is fine, of all the places to fail at styling!

I entered my current company on January 28 and I have made a great effort. I was offered a lead role on may or july but depending on a review period. I know this period came to an end so I ask for a salary raise but they told me the following: "you are closed to the salary band limit so there is no possibility of a salary raise; the only possibility is switching to another role". So I disagreed because I considered I should be rewarded for all the effort I did these months... They came up with the idea of a bonus (they didnt told me the amount) but I still think I should hace set things clear... Like saying: There will be a review or analysis period ? Ok when it will end ?. Whats going to be decided after that ?. If a new role is considered, what will be my responsabilities ?. Because I made a huge effort considering I will be a father... And think this takes me to a place where I must still keep waiting when I know I give proof of my vslue5

how hard is it to set up a wordpress site? i hate to ask but am too busy just to try.
i always build everything from scratch, but my mother constantly asks for a new website providing wp-templates as examples. none of my past fancy features were used so i am a bit tired of putting in the effort. is it worth it or would i just create technical debt? what about security concerns, updates and upwards-compatibility with new php versions to come?3 -

I put a ton of effort into a site that started out as a volunteer effort and turned into a paying job. This is my lowest paying client but has the most arrogant people. Let's see we have graduates from elite universities, super smart, 'rich' business people or they were just plain athletic. But i have found a lot of them are arrogant, selfish jerks to me. I put in a lot of thought and time into what i do for them (my lowest paying client) and they treat me sooo poorly without apology. It makes me sad.1

I had a mandate to help bring a couple of fellow QA testers up to speed on basic automated test code, fill in any knowledge gaps and answer questions.
Met with one co-worker and figured I'd start with his questions and work from there. He opened his test code and said he focused on learning 'if statements' last week but his test isn't running and just throwing errors.
Upon inspection, I realized it was a deeply nested (sometimes 10 or more conditions) single method soup that had never been run through even a syntax check. I blinked... *coughed* and spent the next few hours trying to "port the desired functionality" to a new file while he watched. -
I shouldn't help those who are not actually into programming and are in it for whatever side reason and don't want to make any effort and just want the final answer from you. Right? I know it's right. I've made that mistake before and here I am, making the same mistake!!6

I think from next year hacktoberfest should do something like LudumDare does.
That is, the users which contribute should be able to review other people's PRs and rate them on multiple factors (0-5) like: Appropriateness, Contribution level, Spam level, Effort level etc.1 -
AoC 8b teaches the importance of looking at your data to simplify your solution by simply not supporting inputs that are difficult and don't appear in your sample.

What's the point of Docker Hub's automated builds? It's often faster to just set up a CI build to do the same thing, and it's the same amount of effort to get going.
It's way too damn slow. -
It takes so much effort to make an input group wrapper reactive in Angular. The whole angular form module is so fucking annoying to deal with. "Angular is more opinionated". Fuck you. Angular leaves so many escape hatches so that devs would do the same thing in a million different ways. It's ironic that reactive form is never reactive.

i do the website for this association and had the urge to overhaul everything, implement decent architecture and security, getting rid of awful php/html mixture. considered everything pretty fly and after going live did some minor adjustments primarily in the admin section. like instead of selecting the last 100 logs, all from the last year.
turned out there were 16 logins to the site within the last year. two board member logins (one person). impressive considering all of the functionality for administering the association it was capable of even before the rework.
so we do need a website, everyone wants to be updated, board administration is annoying but fuck my software?
more visitors than all of my other projects though. -
When you write an extra markup just for mobile and after wasting hours you realise that you need to use the same ID on the elements of both versions on the same page thus ending up wasting all the effort.
