When we made a two-day trip to North Wales recently we stayed in a beautiful country house hotel just outside the pretty little market town of Dolgellau, which is traditionally the county town of the historic county of Merionethshire. It is now in the county of Gwynedd. The town is on the River Wnion, a tributary of the River Mawddach, and is a centre for climbing Cadair Idris, which rises to 2,900 feet.
