The American Revolutionary War marked the moment that the thirteen colonies declared independence from Great Britain and formed the United States of America. However, this was not the only struggle taking place. Within the newly founded nation, disagreement had broken out on the ethics of keeping slaves. Abolitionists' fight to end slavery would eventually reach its height with the Civil War, dividing the nation by its opinions on slavery.

The illustrations were created by the newspaper based on images sent with a letter from Kingston, Jamaica, dated May 11th, 1857, describing the capture of slaver ""Zeldina"" and the conditions of the slaves disembarked.
