But I’m letting you in on a little secret: there are exceptions to this rule. So many exceptions! My walls are around 8.5 feet tall, so the top rail should be around 31 inches. But after mapping everything out, it just seemed wrong. I went with 36 inches, and I love the look visually. It feels balanced. (For what it’s worth, I left 3 inches between panels). Here are a few more ideas if you’re trying to figure out your measurements: -Use blue painter’s tape to attach your trim temporarily before nailing it in.
