Description
English: Photo of the Vardøhus Fortress on the outskirts of Vardø, Norway, likely taken in 1996.
  • Restoreed horse-drawn gun carriage ("cannon transport wagon TN1") from 1865. The wagon, which was part of the field horse artillery of Norway at that time, has large robust cartwheels designed to carry a heavy cannon in rugged terrain and is pulled by horses.
  • Vardøhus Fortress (Norwegian: Vardøhus festning) is located in the town of Vardø in Finnmark county, Norway, on the island of Vardøya on the Barents Sea near the Russian border. The northernmost fortress in the world was originally built on the island in the early 14th century as a defense against raids from people further east and to secure Norwegian dominion of Finnmark and the northern territories. The current Vardøhus Fortress was constructed between 1734 and 1738 and remains largely intact in its original form to this day. Covering an area of 25 acres, the defense facility is designed as an octagonal star with low stone-clad earth ramparts. Inside the fortification walls, there are nine distinctive buildings.
