NORTHERN PACIFIC AND CASCADE BRANCH. This branch leaves the main line at Crocker, Washing-ton, at the head of the Puyallup valley, and sends out spursto the coal mining towns of Douty, Burnett, Wilkeson andCarbonado. Of these the largest is Carbonado, which hasi, ooo inhabitants and is built on a mountain bench highabove the brawling waters of the stream. Mining operationshave been carried on here for many years. The mines areowned by the Southern Pacific railroad company, and thecoal is shipped to San Francisco, by ocean vessels loadingat the coal bunkers in Tacoma. At Wilkeson, Burnett andDouty are valuable mines which ship to all points alongthe Pacific coast and also supply the local market ofTacoma. The coal found in this field is of different quali-ties, but may all be classed as bituminous. One mine fur-nishes a coking coal, another a gas coal, and others coalparticularly adapted for locomotive and steamship use. 387 UNITED RAILROADS of WASHINGTON, Tacoma and Ocosta Line, from L
