Summary

[edit]
Description

LUCANIA, Metapontion. Circa 425-350 BC. Æ 21mm - Obol (7.33 g).

Head of Demeter right
"ΟΒΟΛΟΣ" Grain-ear. SNG ANS 554; Rutter HN 1640.

One of the few coin minted in ancient period with value indications.

"...Of these bronze coins, which range in size from .85 to .45 inch, those with the inscription ΟΒΟΛΟΣ are interesting, as they prove that bronze was accepted at Metapontum merely as money of account. (Barclay Head: Historia Numorum. London 1911)
