Title
rowel spur
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy spur of Post-Medieval date. It is missing one terminal, rowel and most of one side of the frame due to old breaks. The frame is D-shaped in section and taper from the thicker central area towards the terminals. A centrally placed and integrally cast rowel box is circular in section formed from two arms, one of which is missing. the remaining arm has a bulbous appearence. What may be a fragment of the iron rivet is in situ within the end of the arm. The terminal has two circular lobes. One of which has the rivet still in place.

This spur frame measures approximately 92mm in current (bent) length and 12mm at its widest. The rowel box measures 26.1mm high from the frame surface, 8mm in thickness and 4mm in width. The object weighs 25.2g. The spur has a reddish brown patina.

This is an incomplete rowl spur of Post-Medieval date similar to examples recorded on this database (see SF-3329A8, SF-F26354 and ESS-60B064) and by Margeson (1993: nos. 1799-1800). Spurs of this type date to between the 17th and 18th centuries AD.
