Stability and Lifetime Studies of Carbon Nanotubes for Electron Cooling in ELENA / Galante, Bruno (CERN ; Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Resta-López, Javier (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; Liverpool U. ; Valencia U.) ; Tranquille, Gerard (CERN) ; Welsch, Carsten (Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.)
Electron cooling is a fundamental process to guarantee beam quality in low energy antimatter facilities. In ELENA, the electron cooler reduces the emittance blow-up of the antiproton beam so that a focused and bright beam can be delivered to the experiments at the unprecedentedly low energy of 100 keV. [...]

Beam Loss Monitors (BLMs) based on optical fibres have been under development for many years as an alternative solution to commonly used methods, such as ionisation chambers. Optical BLMs (oBLMs) maintain standard BLM functionality but can also be used for machine and personal protection. [...]

Simulation studies of the beam cooling process in presence of heating effects in the Extra Low ENergy Antiproton ring (ELENA) / Resta-López, J (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; Liverpool U.) ; Hunt, J R (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; Liverpool U.) ; Karamyshev, O (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; Liverpool U.) ; Welsch, C P (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; Liverpool U.)
The Extra Low ENergy Antiproton ring (ELENA) is a small synchrotron equipped with an electron cooler, which is currently being constructed at CERN to further decelerate antiprotons from the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) from 5.3 MeV to energies as low as 100 keV. At such low energies it is very important to carefully take contributions from electron cooling and beam heating mechanisms (e.g. [...]

Tech. ; Liverpool U.) ; Saá Hernández, Angela (CERN) ; Welsch, Carsten (Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.)
Electron coolers are commonly used in storage rings to reduce the phase space volume of heavy particles such as protons, antiprotons and ions. Their effect depends on the Coulomb interactions between the circulating beam and the cold electrons at small relative velocities. [...]

Electron Beam Based Leather Tanning / Apsimon, Robert (Lancaster U. (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Dewhurst, Kay (Lancaster U. (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Wise, William (Unlisted, UK)
Tanning of leather for clothing, shoes, and handbags uses potentially harmful chemicals that often run off into local water supplies or require a large carbon footprint to safely recover these pollutants. In regions of the world with significant leather production, this can lead to a significant environmental impact. [...]

Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Veness, Raymond (CERN) ; Welsch, Carsten (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) et al.
A hollow electron lens is presently under study as a possible addition to the collimation system for the high luminosity upgrade of the LHC (HL-LHC), while an electron lens system is also proposed for space charge compensation in the SIS-18 synchrotron for the high intensities at the future FAIR facility. For effective operation, a precise alignment is necessary between the high energy hadron beam and the low energy electron beam. [...]
