Multi-objective extremum seeking to control drifts in the transverse beam splitting efficiency of the multi-turn extraction at the CERN proton synchrotron / Uden, Cédric (CERN) ; Huschauer, Alexander (CERN) ; Pahl, Hannes (CERN) ; Schenk, Michael (CERN) ; Madysa, Nico (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN)
Time-varying fluctuations of the intensity sharing between the islands and the core of the beam extracted via the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) Multi-Turn Extraction are the main effects that require manual adjustment for this beam type. To mitigate this, the application of an online controller is explored to further enhance both operational autonomy of the accelerator and physics performance. [...]

Analysis of performance fluctuations for the CERN Proton Synchrotron multi-turn extraction / Huschauer, A (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, M (CERN) ; Michels, O (CERN) ; Nicoletti, A (CERN) ; Sterbini, G (CERN)
After the successful beam commissioning and tests in 2015, the Multi-Turn Extraction (MTE) has been put in operation in 2016. In this paper, the remaining issues related with fluctuation of the MTE performance are evaluated and correlation studies are presented in view of estimating the impact of planned improvements..

Performance of Transverse Beam Splitting and Extraction at the CERN Proton Synchrotron in the Framework of Multi-turn Extraction / Sterbini, Guido (CERN) ; Borburgh, Jan (CERN) ; Damjanovic, Sanja (CERN) ; Gilardoni, Simone (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, Massimo (CERN) ; Hernalsteens, Cédric (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Hourican, Michael (CERN) ; Huschauer, Alexander (CERN ; TU Vienna) ; Kahle, Karsten (CERN) ; Le Godec, Gilles (CERN) et al.
Considerable progress has been made in 2015 in the setting up of the multi-turn extraction (MTE) in the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS). A key ingredient in this novel extraction technique is the beam splitting in transverse phase space. [...]

Transverse Beam Profile Measurements from Extraction Losses in the PS / Hunt, James R (CERN) ; Cerutti, Francesco (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, Massimo (CERN) ; Huschauer, Alexander (CERN) ; Russo, Giulia (CERN ; Frankfurt U.)
During Multi-Turn Extraction (MTE) of continuous beams in the Proton Synchrotron (PS) at CERN, losses are generated on the blade of both the active and non-active septum during the rise time of the extraction kickers. Utilising pCVD Diamond detectors, secondary signal generated from these losses is measured. [...]

Barrier bucket and transversely split beams for loss-free multi-turn extraction in synchrotrons / Vadai, M (CERN ; Queen Mary, U. of London (main)) ; Alomainy, A (Queen Mary, U. of London (main)) ; Damerau, H (CERN) ; Gilardoni, S (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, M (CERN) ; Huschauer, A (CERN)
A special radio-frequency manipulation has been studied and successfully implemented at the CERN Proton Synchrotron for the first time. This technique aims at depleting a well-defined fraction of a continuous longitudinal beam distribution by creating a so-called barrier bucket. [...]

Beam manipulations with barrier buckets in the CERN PS / Vadai, Mihaly (Queen Mary, U. of London (main) ; CERN) ; Alomainy, Akram (Queen Mary, U. of London (main)) ; Damerau, Heiko (CERN) ; Gilardoni, Simone (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, Massimo (CERN) ; Huschauer, Alexander (CERN)
A barrier bucket scheme is being considered to reduce losses during the Multi-Turn Extraction from the CERN Proton Synchrotron to the Super Proton Synchrotron for the fixed-target physics programme. For effective loss reduction, the extraction kicker has to be triggered during the gap at the time of the longitudinal barrier. [...]

Intensity reach of the barrier-bucket multi-turn transfer for fixed-target proton beam from PS to SPS / Damerau, Heiko (CERN) ; Huschauer, Alexander (CERN) ; Lasheen, Alexandre (CERN) ; Cuvelier, Matis (CERN ; U. Paris-Saclay) ; Vadai, Mihaly (CERN) ; Prebibaj, Tirsi (CERN)
Fixed target beams are extracted in five turns from the Proton Synchrotron (PS) at CERN to fill almost half the circumference of the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) with each transfer. To avoid beam loss during the risetime of the extraction kickers a longitudinal gap is generated with an RF barrier-bucket scheme. [...]

Matching studies between CERN PSB and PS through multi-turn beam profile acquisitions / Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Dutheil, Yann (CERN) ; Forte, Vincenzo (CERN) ; Guerrero, Ana (CERN) ; Huschauer, Alexander (CERN) ; Oeftiger, Adrian (CERN) ; Ogur, Salim (CERN) ; Roncarolo, Federico (CERN) ; Senes, Eugenio (CERN) ; Tecker, Frank (CERN)
In the framework of the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project, the investigation and quantification of the optics mismatch between the CERN Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) and PS is a crucial step in understanding the source of horizontal emittance growth between the two machines. Extensive studies were carried out to estimate the mismatch from single-pass measurements in the transfer line and to rematch the transfer line to reduce the dispersive mismatch at PS injection while keeping the betatron matching unaltered. A Multi-Turn Measurement System for the CERN PS / Angoletta, Maria Elena ; Müller, A S
Multi-turn beam position measurements on one or more pickups provide very important information needed to derive machine optics parameters. A variety of analyses is possible, such as determination of phase advance, detuning with amplitude, and most important, the exploration of phase space. [...]

Shower Simulations for the CERN Proton Synchrotron Internal Dump and Comparison with Beam Loss Monitor Data / Niang, Samuel (CERN) ; Domange, Delphine (U. Brussels (main)) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, Massimo (CERN) ; Hernalsteens, Cédric (CERN) ; Huschauer, Alexander (CERN) ; Pugnat, Thomas (CERN)
During the Long Shutdown 2 (LS2), two new internal dumps (TDIs) were installed and successfully put into operation in the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) to withstand the intense and bright beams produced for the High Luminosity LHC. TDIs serve as safety devices designed to rapidly enter the beam trajectory and stop the beam over multiple turns. [...]
