A new Low Gain Avalanche Diode concept: the double-LGAD / Carnesecchi, F. (CERN) ; Strazzi, S. (INFN, Bologna ; U. Bologna, DIFA) ; Alici, A. (INFN, Bologna ; U. Bologna, DIFA) ; Arcidiacono, R. (INFN, Turin ; Piemonte Orientale U., Alessandria) ; Cartiglia, N. (INFN, Turin) ; Cavazza, D. (INFN, Bologna) ; Durando, S. (INFN, Turin ; Turin Polytechnic) ; Ferrero, M. (INFN, Turin) ; Margotti, A. (INFN, Bologna) ; Menzio, L. (INFN, Turin ; Turin U.) et al.
This paper describes the new concept of the double-LGAD. The goal is to increase the charge at the input of the electronics, keeping a time resolution equal or better than a standard (single) LGAD; this has been realized by adding the charges of two coupled LGADs while still using a single front-end electronics. UFSDs with a nominal thickness of 25 $\mu$m and 35 $\mu$m and an area of 1 $\times$ 1 $\text{mm}^2$ have been considered, together with an additional HPK 50-$\mu$m thick sensor, taken as reference. A latitude range well above the Arctic Circle was explored on board of a sailboat, up to the unprecedented northernmost value of $82^{\circ }07^{\prime }$ N. [...]

The Extreme Energy Events (EEE) experiment is a strategic project of Centro Fermi dedicated to the study of extreme energy cosmic rays with an innovative outreach approach: high school students are directly involved in the experiment and play a primary role. EEE exploits a network of muon tracking telescopes constituted by three large area MRPCs. [...]

The existence of time correlations in detectors separated by distances much larger than the size of the highest energy extensive air showers (EAS) has been long discussed over the years. Several mechanisms have been proposed to justify the existence of such events and, in the last decade, some experiments have also tried to search for correlations on a large scale distance, beyond one hundred kilometers. Due to their efficiency, tracking capabilities and long-term operational conditions, Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPC) may be used in a stable location in coincidence with additional detectors fixed to other parts of a civil building, to detect relative displacements of different parts of the building due to long term deformations of the structure. In this contribution we report the results of two different measurements carried out in the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Catania (with three floors above the ground and an underground basement), using one of the MRPC telescopes of the Extreme Energy Events project, in coincidence with two scintillator-based muon telescopes located in various positions inside the building. Measurements with cosmic muons to monitor the stability of a civil building on a long time-scale / EEE Collaboration
Due to their penetration capability, cosmic muons may provide a way to monitor the alignment and possible long term deformations of large structures, such as historical or other civil buildings. The basic idea behind this possibility is to look for any misalignment between position-sensitive detectors, fixed to different parts of the structure, relative to the original alignment condition.
