/ Heinke, Reinhard (CERN) ; Au, Mia (CERN ; Mainz U.) ; Bernerd, Cyril (CERN ; Leuven U.) ; Chrysalidis, Katerina (CERN) ; Cocolios, Thomas E (Leuven U.) ; Fedosseev, Valentin N (CERN) ; Hendriks, Isabel (CERN ; Lund U. We report on the development, characterization, and first application of a specialized resonance ionization laser ion source for high-resolution spectroscopy applications below usual hot cavity Doppler broadening limitations, for on-line experiments at CERN-ISOLDE. The new PI-LIST ion source comprises perpendicular laser/atom beam interaction in a radio-frequency quadrupole unit directly downstream the hot atomizer cavity. [...]

To study exotic nuclides at the borders of stability with laser ionization and spectroscopy techniques, highest efficiencies in combination with a high spectral resolution are required. These usually opposing requirements are reconciled by applying the in-gas-laser ionization and spectroscopy (IGLIS) technique in the supersonic gas jet produced by a de Laval nozzle installed at the exit of the stopping gas cell. Alternative approach to populate and study the $^{229}$Th nuclear clock isomer
/ Verlinde, M. (Leuven U.) ; Kraemer, S. (Leuven U.) ; Moens, J. (Leuven U.) ; Chrysalidis, K. (CERN) ; Correia, J.G. (Lisbon, IST) ; Cottenier, S. (U. Gent (main) ; Unlisted, BE) ; De Witte, H. (Leuven U.) ; Fedorov, D.V. (Kurchatov Inst., Moscow) ; Fedosseev, V.N. (CERN) ; Ferrer, R. (Leuven U.) et al.
A new approach to observe the radiative decay of the $^{229}$Th nuclear isomer, and to determine its energy and radiative lifetime, is presented. Situated at a uniquely low excitation energy, this nuclear state might be a key ingredient for the development of a nuclear clock, a nuclear laser and the search for time variations of the fundamental constants. Towards high-resolution laser ionization spectroscopy of the heaviest elements in supersonic gas jet expansion
/ Ferrer, R (KU Leuven, Dept. Phys. Resonant laser ionization and spectroscopy are widely used techniques at radioactive ion
beam facilities to produce pure beams of exotic nuclei and measure the shape, size, spin and
electromagnetic multipole moments of these nuclei. However, in such measurements it is
difficult to combine a high efficiency with a high spectral resolution. [...]

High-resolution collinear laser spectroscopy has been performed on singly charged ions of $^{234,235,238}$U at the IGISOL facility of the Accelerator Laboratory, University of Jyväskylä, in Finland. Ten ionic transitions from the $^{4}\hbox {I}_{9/2}$ and $^{6}\hbox {L}_{11/2}$ ground and first excited states were measured in the 300 nm wavelength range, improving the precision of the hyperfine parameters of the lower states in addition to providing newly measured values for the upper levels. Nuclear charge radii of $^{62−80}$Zn and their dependence on cross-shell proton excitations

Brussels (main)) et al.
Nuclear charge radii of $^{62−80}$Zn have been determined using collinear laser spectroscopy of bunched ion beams at CERN-ISOLDE. The subtle variations of observed charge radii, both within one isotope and along the full range of neutron numbers, are found to be well described in terms of the proton excitations across the $Z=28$ shell gap, as predicted by large-scale shell model calculations. The nucleus of the radioisotope thorium-229 (${}^{229}$Th) features an isomer with an exceptionally low excitation energy that enables direct laser manipulation of nuclear states. For this reason, it is a leading candidate for use in next-generation optical clocks. [...]

We report on high-resolution laser spectroscopy studies on Cf249–253 with spectral linewidths in the order of 100 MHz carried out at the RISIKO mass separator at Mainz University. In total three atomic ground-state transitions were investigated and the hyperfine parameters for the odd-A isotopes and isotope shift for all examined isotopes have been determined from the measured spectra. The in-gas laser ionization and spectroscopy (IGLIS) technique was applied on the Ac212–215 isotopes, produced at the Leuven Isotope Separator On-Line (LISOL) facility by using the in-gas-cell and the in-gas-jet methods. The first application under on-line conditions of the in-gas-jet laser spectroscopy method showed a superior performance in terms of selectivity, spectral resolution, and efficiency in comparison with the in-gas-cell method.
