Atmospheric oxidation is an important phenomenon which produces large quantities of low-volatility compounds such as sulfuric acid and oxidized organic compounds. Such species may be involved in the nucleation of particles and enhance their subsequent growth to reach the size of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). [...]

Hygroscopicity of nanoparticles produced from homogeneous nucleation in the CLOUD experiments / Kim, J (UEF, Kuopio) ; Ahlm, L (Stockholm U.) ; Yli-Juuti, T (UEF, Kuopio) ; Lawler, M (UEF, Kuopio ; NCAR, Boulder) ; Keskinen, H (UEF, Kuopio) ; Tröstl, J (PSI, Villigen) ; Schobesberger, S (Helsinki U.) ; Duplissy, J (Helsinki U.) ; Amorim, A (Lisbon, CENTRA) ; Bianchi, F (PSI, Villigen ; Zurich, ETH) et al.
Sulfuric acid, amines and oxidized organics have been found to be important compounds in the nucleation and initial growth of atmospheric particles. Because of the challenges involved in determining the chemical composition of objects with very small mass, however, the properties of the freshly nucleated particles and the detailed pathways of their formation processes are still not clear. Atmospheric aerosols and their effect on clouds are thought to be important for anthropogenic radiative forcing of the climate, yet remain poorly understood. Globally, around half of cloud condensation nuclei originate from nucleation of atmospheric vapours. [...]

A major fraction of atmospheric aerosol particles, which affect both air quality and climate, form from gaseous precursors in the atmosphere. Highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs), formed by oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds, are known to participate in particle formation and growth. [...]

Oxidation Products of Biogenic Emissions Contribute to Nucleation of Atmospheric Particles / Riccobono, Francesco (PSI, Villigen) ; Schobesberger, S (Helsinki U.) ; Baltensperger, Urs (PSI, Villigen) ; Worsnop, Douglas R (Helsinki U. ; Aerodyne Research, Billerica) ; Curtius, Joachim (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Carslaw, Kenneth S (U. Atmospheric new-particle formation affects climate and is one of the least understood atmospheric aerosol processes. The complexity and variability of the atmosphere has hindered elucidation of the fundamental mechanism of new-particle formation from gaseous precursors. [...]

Modeling the thermodynamics and kinetics of sulfuric acid-dimethylamine-water nanoparticle growth in the CLOUD chamber / Ahlm, L (ACES, Stockholm University) ; Yli-Juuti, T (UEF, Kuopio) ; Schobesberger, S (Helsinki U. ; Washington U., Seattle) ; Praplan, A P (Helsinki U.) ; Kim, J (UEF, Kuopio) ; Tikkanen, O -P (UEF, Kuopio ; Helsinki U.) ; Lawler, M J (UC, Irvine) ; Smith, J N (UEF, Kuopio ; UC, Irvine) ; Tröstl, J (PSI, Villigen) ; Acosta Navarro, J C (ACES, Stockholm University) et al.
Dimethylamine (DMA) has a stabilizing effect on sulfuric acid (SA) clusters, and the SA and DMA molecules and clusters likely play important roles in both aerosol particle formation and growth in the atmosphere. We use the monodisperse particle growth model for acid-base chemistry in nanoparticle growth (MABNAG) together with direct and indirect observations from the CLOUD4 and CLOUD7 experiments in the cosmics leaving outdoor droplets (CLOUD) chamber at CERN to investigate the size and composition evolution of freshly formed particles consisting of SA, DMA, and water as they grow to 20 nm in dry diameter [...]

Unexpectedly acidic nanoparticles formed in dimethylamine–ammonia–sulfuric-acid nucleation experiments at CLOUD / Lawler, Michael J (UC, Irvine (main)) ; Winkler, Paul M (Vienna U.) ; Kim, Jaeseok (UEF, Kuopio ; Korea Polar Research Institute, Republic of Korea) ; Ahlm, Lars (Stockholm U.) ; Tröstl, Jasmin (PSI, Villigen) ; Praplan, Arnaud P (Helsinki U. ; Finnish Meteorological Inst.) ; Schobesberger, Siegfried (Helsinki U. ; Washington U., Seattle) ; Kürten, Andreas (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Kirkby, Jasper (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main) ; CERN) ; Bianchi, Federico (Helsinki U.) et al.
New particle formation driven by acid–base chemistry was initiated in the CLOUD chamber at CERN by introducing atmospherically relevant levels of gas-phase sulfuric acid and dimethylamine (DMA). Ammonia was also present in the chamber as a gas-phase contaminant from earlier experiments [...]

Sulphuric acid, ammonia, amines, and oxidised organics play a crucial role in nanoparticle formation in the atmosphere. In this study, we investigate the composition of nucleated nanoparticles formed from these compounds in the CLOUD (Cosmics Leaving Outdoor Droplets) chamber experiments at CERN (Centre europ ́ een pour la recherche nucl ́ eaire). Insight into Acid–Base Nucleation Experiments by Comparison of the Chemical Composition of Positive, Negative, and Neutral Clusters / Bianchi, Federico (PSI, Villigen) ; Praplan, Arnaud P (Helsinki U.) ; Sarnela, Nina (Helsinki U.) ; Dommen, Josef (PSI, Villigen) ; Kürten, Andreas (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Ortega, Ismael K (Lille U.) ; Schobesberger, Siegfried (Helsinki U.) ; Junninen, Heikki (Helsinki U.) ; Simon, Mario (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Tröstl, Jasmin (PSI, Villigen) et al.
We investigated the nucleation of sulfuric acid together with two bases (ammonia and dimethylamine), at the CLOUD chamber at CERN. The chemical composition of positive, negative, and neutral clusters was studied using three Atmospheric Pressure interface-Time Of Flight (APi-TOF) mass spectrometers: two were operated in positive and negative mode to detect the chamber ions, while the third was equipped with a nitrate ion chemical ionization source allowing detection of neutral clusters. The role of low-volatility organic compounds in initial particle growth in the atmosphere / Tröstl, Jasmin (PSI, Villigen) ; Chuang, Wayne K (Carnegie Mellon U. About half of present-day cloud condensation nuclei originate from atmospheric nucleation, frequently appearing as a burst of new particles near midday. Atmospheric observations show that the growth rate of new particles often accelerates when the diameter of the particles is between one and ten nanometres. [...]
