Radiological Characterization with a Fluence Conversion Coefficients–Based Method: A Practical Example of the Preparatory Studies to the Pilot Beam at the CERN Large Hadron Collider / Bozzato, Davide (CERN) ; Froeschl, Robert (CERN)
At high-energy accelerator facilities like the ones that are part of the accelerator complex at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Monte Carlo radiation transport codes are widely employed to face the challenges of estimating radionuclide production yields and activities with the aim of performing the radiological characterization of activated components. Indeed, it is of paramount importance to ensure adequate radiation protection during scheduled maintenance, transport, and handling of these components and to establish their proper disposal pathway once they ultimately reach the end of their useful life. Advanced simulation techniques for Radiation Protection studies at the Large Hadron Collider / Bozzato, Davide (CERN) ; Dyrcz, Patrycja (CERN) ; Froeschl, Robert (CERN) ; Infantino, Angelo (CERN) ; Lorenzon, Tommaso (CERN) ; Tisi, Marco (CERN) ; Vincke, Heinz (CERN)
The paper provides an overview of the radiation protection challenges and the advanced simulation techniques used to study and plan complex interventions in radiation areas at CERN, particularly with regard to the Large Hadron Collider. The operational radiation protection aspects are supported by state of the art simulations by means of the FLUKA Monte Carlo code and estimates obtained via several tools, used within the CERN Radiation Protection group, such as ActiWiz, SESAME, and the Fluence Conversion Coefficients (FCC) method which extend the built-in FLUKA capabilities. Physical Design of the Radiation Shielding for the CMS Experiment at LHC / Azhgirey, Igor L (Serpukhov, IHEP) ; Bozzato, Davide (CERN) ; Dabrowski, Anne E (CERN) ; Kurochkin, Igor A (Serpukhov, IHEP) ; Mallows, Sophie (KIT, Karlsruhe, ETP) ; Riabchikova, Anastasiia D (Serpukhov, IHEP)
The design of the radiation shielding for the CMS experiment at the LHC requires a simulation of the radiation environment using a model of the CMS experimental setup, accelerator components and the experimental hall infrastructure. The radiation simulations are used to optimise the design of the CMS detectors components and also the interface of the CMS detector with LHC accelerator. [...]

Radiation Simulations group of the Beam Radiation Instrumentation and Luminosity Project of the CMS experiment provide for CMS radiation environment and radiation effects simulation and benchmarking of these calculations with CMS data and other data from LHC measuring devices. We present some results of such benchmarking and the reliability analysis of the simulation procedures for radiation environment calculations at the LHC..

A method for radiological characterization based on fluence conversion coefficients / Froeschl, Robert (CERN)
Radiological characterization of components in accelerator environments is often required to ensure adequate radiation protection during maintenance, transport and handling as well as for the selection of the proper disposal pathway. The relevant quantities are typical the weighted sums of specific activities with radionuclide-specific weighting coefficients. [...]

Maintenance activities and operations of high-energy particle accelerators can lead to the collection of radioactive equipment as well as waste materials. In order to ensure their proper classification as radioactive or non-radioactive, one has to quantify the activities of radionuclides produced. [...]

Fluence to Local Skin Dose Conversion Coefficients (LSD-CC) are radiological protection quantities used for external radiation exposures which allow the conversion of particle fluences into local skin equivalent dose. The International Commission on Radiological Protection published LSD-CC for electrons with an energy range from 10 keV to 10 MeV. [...]
