Studies of Heavy Pear-shaped Nuclei / Butler, P A (Liverpool U.)
For certain combinations of protons and neutrons it is expected that the shape of atomic nuclei can undergo octupole deformation, which would give rise to reflection asymmetry or a “pear shape”. Here it is described how recent experiments carried out at CERN using REX-ISOLDE and HIE-ISOLDE and the Miniball gamma-ray spectrometer have provided evidence that several radium and radon isotopes have either stable pear shapes or are octupole vibrational in nature. Enhancing the performance of solenoidal spectrometers for inverse reactions / Butler, P.A. (Liverpool U.)
Helical-orbit solenoidal spectrometers, in which the target and detector are placed inside a uniform magnetic field, have been utilised for more than a decade to study nuclear reactions in inverse kinematics, induced by radioactive beams. Methods to improve the final state energy resolution are presented and the inclusion of an active gas target is proposed to improve the performance of the spectrometer..

The nature of quadrupole and octupole collectivity in $^{222}$Rn was investigated by determining the electric-quadrupole (E2) and octupole (E3) matrix elements using subbarrier, multistep Coulomb excitation. The radioactive $^{222}$Rn beam, accelerated to 4.23 MeV/u, was provided by the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN. [...]

The single-particle properties of $^{29}$Mg have been investigated via a measurement of the $^{28}$Mg(d,p) 29Mg reaction, in inverse kinematics, using the ISOLDE Solenoidal Spectrometer. The negative-parity intruder states from the f p shell have been identified and used to benchmark modern shell-model calculations. [...]

First Exploration of Neutron Shell Structure Below Lead and Beyond $\boldsymbol{N=126}$ / Tang, T.L. (Argonne) ; Kay, B.P. (Argonne) ; Hoffman, C.R. (Argonne) ; Schiffer, J.P. (Argonne) ; Sharp, D.K. The nuclei below lead but with more than 126 neutrons are crucial to an understanding of the astrophysical $r$-process in producing nuclei heavier than $A\sim190$. Despite their importance, the structure and properties of these nuclei remain experimentally untested as they are difficult to produce in nuclear reactions with stable beams. [...]

Evolution of Octupole Deformation in Radium Nuclei from Coulomb Excitation of Radioactive $^{222}\mathrm{Ra}$ and $^{228}\mathrm{Ra}$ Beams / Butler, P.A. (U. Liverpool (main)) ; Gaffney, L.P. (U. (Leuven U.) ; Garrett, P.E. (Guelph U.) ; Goldkuhle, A. (Cologne U.) et al.
There is sparse direct experimental evidence that atomic nuclei can exhibit stable pear shapes arising from strong octupole correlations. In order to investigate the nature of octupole collectivity in radium isotopes, electric octupole ($E3$) matrix elements have been determined for transitions in $^{222,228}$Ra nuclei using the method of sub-barrier, multi-step Coulomb excitation. The observation of vibrating pear-shapes in radon nuclei / Butler, P.A. (Liverpool U.) ; Gaffney, L.P. (Liverpool U. ; CERN) ; Spagnoletti, P. (West Scotland U.) ; Konki, J. (CERN) ; Scheck, M. There is a large body of evidence that atomic nuclei can undergo octupole distortion and assume the shape of a pear. This phenomenon is important for measurements of electric-dipole moments of atoms, which would indicate CP violation and hence probe physics beyond the standard model of particle physics. [...]

The neutron-deficient mercury isotopes serve as a classical example of shape coexistence, whereby at low energy near-degenerate nuclear states characterized by different shapes appear. The electromagnetic structure of even-mass $^{182-188}$ Hg isotopes was studied using safe-energy Coulomb excitation of neutron-deficient mercury beams delivered by the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN.
