Coulomb excitation of pear-shaped nuclei / Butler, Peter (Liverpool U.) ; Gaffney, Liam (Liverpool U. ; CERN) ; Spagnoletti, Pietro (West Scotland U.) ; Konki, Joonas (CERN) ; Scheck, Marcus (West Scotland U.) ; Smith, John (West Scotland U.) ; Abrahams, Kenzo (Western Cape U.) ; Bowry, Michael (TRIUMF) ; Cederkäll, Joakim (Lund U.) ; Chupp, Timothy (Michigan U.) et al.
There is a large body of evidence that atomic nuclei can undergo octupole distortion and assume the shape of a pear. This phenomenon is important for measurements of electric-dipole moments of atoms, which would indicate CP violation and hence probe physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. [...]

The nature of quadrupole and octupole collectivity in $^{222}$Rn was investigated by determining the electric-quadrupole (E2) and octupole (E3) matrix elements using subbarrier, multistep Coulomb excitation. The radioactive $^{222}$Rn beam, accelerated to 4.23 MeV/u, was provided by the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN. [...]

Evolution of Octupole Deformation in Radium Nuclei from Coulomb Excitation of Radioactive $^{222}\mathrm{Ra}$ and $^{228}\mathrm{Ra}$ Beams / Butler, P.A. (U. Liverpool (main)) ; Gaffney, L.P. (U. Liverpool (main) ; CERN) ; Spagnoletti, P. (Paisley U.) ; Abrahams, K. (Western Cape U.) ; Bowry, M. (Paisley U. ; TRIUMF) ; Cederkäll, J. (Lund U.) ; de Angelis, G. (INFN, Legnaro) ; De Witte, H. (Leuven U.) ; Garrett, P.E. (Guelph U.) ; Goldkuhle, A. (Cologne U.) et al.
There is sparse direct experimental evidence that atomic nuclei can exhibit stable pear shapes arising from strong octupole correlations. In order to investigate the nature of octupole collectivity in radium isotopes, electric octupole ($E3$) matrix elements have been determined for transitions in $^{222,228}$Ra nuclei using the method of sub-barrier, multi-step Coulomb excitation. New spectroscopic information on $^{211,213}\mathrm{Tl}$: A changing structure beyond the $N=126$ shell closure / Gottardo, A (INFN, Legnaro ; Padua U.) ; Valiente-Dobón, J J (INFN, Legnaro) ; Benzoni, G (INFN, Milan) ; Morales, A I (INFN, Milan) ; Gadea, A (Valencia U., IFIC) ; Lunardi, S (Padua U. ; INFN, Padua) ; Boutachkov, P (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Bruce, A M (Brighton U.) ; Górska, M (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Grebosz, J (Cracow, INP) et al.
The neutron-rich isotopes $^{211,213}\mathrm{Tl}$, beyond the $N=126$ shell closure, have been studied for the first time in isomer $\gamma$-ray decay, exploiting the fragmentation of a primary uranium beam at the Fragment Separator-Rare Isotopes Investigation at GSI setup. The observed isomeric states in $^{211,213}\mathrm{Tl}$ show a deviation from the seniority-like scheme of $^{209}\mathrm{Tl}$. [...]

New measurements of very exotic nuclei in the neutron-rich region beyond N=126 have been performed at the GSI facility with the fragment separator (FRS). The aim of the experiment is to determine half-lives and beta-delayed neutron emission branching ratios of isotopes of Hg, Tl and Pb in this region. [...]

The $\beta$-delayed neutron emission probabilities of neutron rich Hg and Tl nuclei have been measured together with $\beta$-decay half-lives for 20 isotopes of Au, Hg, Tl, Pb and Bi in the mass region N$\gtrsim$126. These are the heaviest species where neutron emission has been observed so far. [...]
