The RaDIATE High-Energy Proton Materials Irradiation Experiment at the Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer Facility
/ Ammigan, Kavin (Fermilab) ; Amroussia, Aida (Michigan State U.) ; Avilov, Mikhail (Michigan State U., East Lansing (main)) ; Boehlert, Carl (Michigan State U.) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Casella, Andrew (PNL, Richland) ; Densham, Chris (Rutherford) ; Fornasiere, Elvis (CERN) ; Hurh, Patrick (Fermilab) ; Ishida, Taku (KEK, Tsukuba) et al.
The RaDIATE collaboration (Radiation Damage In Accelerator Target Environments) was founded in 2012 to bring together the high-energy accelerator target and nuclear materials communities to address the challenging issue of radiation damage effects in beam-intercepting materials. Success of current and future high intensity accelerator target facilities requires a fundamental understanding of these effects including measurement of materials property data. [...]

Thermal shock experiment of beryllium exposed to intense high energy proton beam pulses
/ Ammigan, K (Fermilab) ; Bidhar, S (Fermilab) ; Hurh, P (Fermilab) ; Zwaska, R (Fermilab) ; Butcher, M (CERN) ; Calviani, M (CERN) ; Guinchard, M (CERN) ; Losito, R (CERN) ; Kuksenko, V (Oxford U.) ; Roberts, S (Oxford U.) et al.
Beryllium is a material extensively used in various particle accelerator beam lines and target facilities, as beam windows and, to a lesser extent, as secondary particle production targets. With increasing beam intensities of future multimegawatt accelerator facilities, these components will have to withstand even greater thermal and mechanical loads during operation. [...]

Experimental results of beryllium exposed to intense high energy proton beam pulses

Beryllium is extensively used in various accelerator beam lines and target facilities as material for beam windows, and to a lesser extent, as secondary particle production targets. With increasing beam intensities of future accelerator facilities, it is critical to understand the response of beryllium under extreme conditions to reliably operate these components as well as avoid compromising particle production efficiency by limiting beam parameters. High Power Targetry R&D program with the RaDIATE Collaboration and target perspectives in the framework of Snowmass
/ Pellemoine, Frederique (speaker) (Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory)
A high-power target system is a key beam element to complete future High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments. In the recent past, major accelerator facilities [1,3] have been limited in beam power not by their accelerators, but by the beam intercepting device survivability. The target must then endure high power pulsed beam [4], leading to high cycle thermal stresses/pressures and thermal shocks. The increased beam power will also create significant challenges such as corrosion and radiation damage that can cause harmful effects on the material and degrade their mechanical and thermal properties during irradiation [...]

The new neutron spallation target for the CERN neutron Time-Of-Flight (n_TOF) facility is based on a nitrogen-cooled Pb core impacted by short high-intensity proton beam pulses. An extensive material characterization campaign has been carried out to define the constitutive behavior of lead and assess its response under pulsed proton beam irradiation. [...]
