We report on the measurements of the total charge changing fragmentation cross sections in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions using Fe, Si and Pb incident ions. Several stacks of CR39 nuclear track detectors with different target combinations were exposed at normal incidence to high energy accelerator beams to integrated densities of about 2000 ions/cm^2. Fragmentation studies of 158 A GeV Pb ions using CR39 nuclear track detectors ; rev. version
/ Dekhissi, H ; Giacomelli, G ; Giorgini, M ; Mandrioli, G ; Manzoor, S ; Patrizii, L ; Popa, V ; Serra, P ; Togo, V
Six stacks of CR39 nuclear track detectors with different targets were exposed to a lead ion beam of 158 A GeV at the CERN-SPS, at normal incidence, in order to study the fragmentation properties of ultra-relativistic lead nuclei. Measurements of the total, break-up and pick-up charge-changing cross sections of 158 A GeV Pb ions have been made for the first time..

We report the measurement of the fragmentation cross sections in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions using the 158 A GeV Pb beam from the CERN-SPS. The fragments have charges changed from that of the incident projectile nucleus by $\Delta Z=Z_{Pb}-Z_{frag}$, with 8 <\Delta Z <75. [...]

Three stacks of plastic CR-39 Nuclear Track Detectors (NTD) were exposed to 158 A GeV /sup 207/Pb ions at the CERN-SPS beam facility. The main purpose of this experiment was the calibration of the CR-39 for the search of atmospheric magnetic monopoles. [...]

New calibrations of CR39 and Makrofol nuclear track detectors have been obtained using 158 A GeV Pb (82+) and In (49+) ions/ a new method for the bulk etch rate determination, using both cone height and base diameter measurements was developed. The CR39 charge resolution based on the etch-pit base area measurement is adequate to identify nuclear fragments in the interval 7 <= Z/beta <= 49. [...]
