/ Rodin, Volodymyr (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Demassieux, Quentin (CERN) ; Matheson, Eloise (CERN) ; Solis Paiva, Santiago (CERN) ; Seidenbinder, Regis (CERN) ; Aberle, Oliver (CERN) ; Perillo Marcone, Antonio (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) et al.
Bent crystals are a mature technology used in several applications at CERN, such as the crystal-assisted collimation system for LHC ion operation and reduction of losses during the slow extraction from the SPS by shadowing the electrostatic septum. In the future, it is planned to measure electric and magnetic dipole moments of short-lived particles with a double-crystal experiment in the LHC. [...]

Manipulating high energy beams with bent crystals has applications ranging from beam collimation to slow or direct beam extraction. These systems are now integrated parts of accelerators and studied for future experimental set-ups.With growing achievements and expectations of crystal beam manipulation, requirements for the devices that operate the crystals become more stringent. Crystal collimation is studied to improve the collimation efficiency with ion beams at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). Bent crystals are used instead of conventional primary collimators to deflect high-energy halo particles at angles orders of magnitude larger than what can be achieved with scattering by conventional materials. In the next heavy ion runs at the LHC, the cleaning of the beam halo will rely on crystal collimation. A test system installed in the collimation cleaning insertion is being upgraded for the operational challenges of the ion runs. [...]

Characterization of bent crystals for beam collimation with 6.8 TeV proton beams at the LHC
/ D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Aberle, Oliver (CERN) ; Abramov, Andrey (CERN) ; Bandiera, Laura (INFN, Ferrara) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cai, Rongrong (CERN ; EPFL-ISIC, Lausanne) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Demassieux, Quentin (CERN) ; Dewhurst, Kay Alana (CERN) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) et al.
The concept of crystal collimation exploits the peculiar properties of crystalline materials to deflect high-energy beam particles at angles orders of magnitude larger than what can be achieved with scattering by conventional materials used as primary collimators. This innovative technique is planned to be used to improve the collimation efficiency with heavy-ion beams at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its High-Luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC). [...]

Evaluation of Power Deposition in HL-LHC with Crystal-assisted Heavy Ion Collimation

The future LHC heavy-ion program, utilizing 208Pb⁸²⁺ beams at up to 7 Z TeV, is anticipated to operate with substantial intensity upgrade. During periods of short beam lifetime, a potential performance limitation may arise from secondary ions produced by electromagnetic dissociation and hadronic fragmentation in the collimators of the betatron cleaning insertion. Modeling and metrological analysis of an X-ray diffractometer for crystal-assisted collimation in particle accelerator
/ Arpaia, Pasquale (Naples U.) ; Gargiulo, Simone (CERN ; Naples U.) ; Gavrikov, Yury (Kurchatov Inst., Moscow) ; Masi, Alessandro (CERN) ; Scandale, Walter (CERN)
A FEM model of a double-crystal diffractometer and its metrological analysis is proposed for a complete characterization of bent crystals involved in the process of particles collimation in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, in terms of miscut, bending and torsion angles. The model reproduces the laboratory measurement procedure based mainly on a 2D scanning algorithm and a π rad flip of the crystal under test. [...]

In 2023, the LHC started its Run 3 operation with $^{208}\text{PB}^{82+}$ beams at 6.8 ZTeV, with a substantially higher number of bunches compared to past runs. Several new hardware systems were used operationally for the first time with high-intensity beams, including bent crystal collimators in the betatron cleaning insertion. [...]
