Excited states of the neutron-rich niobium isotopes Nb96,97,98,4196,97,98,99 have been populated in two experiments which used fusion-fission and multinucleon binary grazing reactions to populate high-spin yrast states. In the multinucleon-transfer experiment, a 530-MeV beam of Zr96 ions was incident on a thin Sn124 target; projectile-like ejectiles were detected and identified using the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the associated γ rays were detected using the CLARA array of Ge detectors. Single-neutron states in the Z=30 , N=49 isotope 79 Zn have been populated using the 78 Zn(d, p) 79 Zn transfer reaction at REX-ISOLDE, CERN. The experimental setup allowed the combined detection of protons ejected in the reaction, and of γ rays emitted by 79 Zn. [...]

Excited states in $^{217}$Ra populated in the α decay of $^{221}$Th / Parr, E (West Scotland U. ; SUPA, UK) ; Smith, J F (West Scotland U. ; SUPA, UK) ; Greenlees, P T (Jyvaskyla U.) ; Auranen, K (Jyvaskyla U.) ; Chapman, R (West Scotland U. ; SUPA, UK) ; Cullen, D M (Manchester U.) ; Grahn, T (Jyvaskyla U.) ; Grocutt, L (West Scotland U. ; SUPA, UK) ; Herzáň, A (Jyvaskyla U. ; Bratislava, Inst. Phys.) ; Herzberg, R D (Liverpool U.) et al.
Fine structure in the α decay of $^{221}_{90}$Th, populating excited states in $^{217}_{88}$Ra, was studied using αγ-coincidence spectroscopy. Two α-decay branches from $^{221}$Th have been newly observed, with $E_{\alpha} \mathrm{(keV)} [b_{\alpha}(\%)]=7951(8)[0.14(3)]$ and $8247(3)[1.51(12)]$, together with three previously known branches. Restoring the valence-shell stabilization in $^{140}$Nd / Kern, R (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Zidarova, R (Darmstadt, Tech. A projectile Coulomb-excitation experiment was performed at the radioactive-ion beam facility HIE-ISOLDE at CERN to obtain $E2$ and $M1$ transition matrix elements of $^{140}$Nd using the multistep Coulomb-excitation code GOSIA. The absolute $M1$ strengths, $\textrm{B}(M1;2^+_2→2^+_1)=0.033(8)μ^2_N,\textrm{B}(M1;2^+_3→2^+_1)=0.26^{+0.11}_{−0.10}μ^2_N$, and $\textrm{B}(M1;2^+_4→2^+_1)<0.04μ^2_{\textrm{N}}$, identify the $2^+_3$ state as the main fragment of the one-quadrupole-phonon proton-neutron mixed-symmetry state of $^{140}$Nd. Evolution of Octupole Deformation in Radium Nuclei from Coulomb Excitation of Radioactive $^{222}\mathrm{Ra}$ and $^{228}\mathrm{Ra}$ Beams / Butler, P.A. (U. Liverpool (main)) ; Gaffney, L.P. (U. Liverpool (main) ; CERN) ; Spagnoletti, P. (Paisley U.) ; Abrahams, K. (Western Cape U.) ; Bowry, M. (Paisley U. ; TRIUMF) ; Cederkäll, J. (Lund U.) ; de Angelis, G. (INFN, Legnaro) ; De Witte, H. (Leuven U.) ; Garrett, P.E. (Guelph U.) ; Goldkuhle, A. (Cologne U.) et al.
There is sparse direct experimental evidence that atomic nuclei can exhibit stable pear shapes arising from strong octupole correlations. In order to investigate the nature of octupole collectivity in radium isotopes, electric octupole ($E3$) matrix elements have been determined for transitions in $^{222,228}$Ra nuclei using the method of sub-barrier, multi-step Coulomb excitation. Coulomb excitation of $^{29,30}$Na: Mapping the borders of the island of inversion / Seidlitz, M (Cologne U.) ; Reiter, P (Cologne U.) ; Altenkirch, R (Cologne U.) ; Bastin, B (KU Leuven, Dept. Phys. Nuclear shell evolution in neutron-rich Na nuclei around N=20 was studied by determining reduced transition probabilities, i.e., B(E2) and B(M1) values, in order to map the border of the island of inversion. To this end Coulomb-excitation experiments, employing radioactive 29,30Na beams with a final beam energy of 2.85 MeV/nucleon, were performed at REX-ISOLDE, CERN. [...]

Multiple Coulomb Scattering of muons in Lithium Hydride / MICE Collaboration
Multiple Coulomb Scattering (MCS) is a well known phenomenon occurring when charged particles traverse materials. Measurements of muons traversing low $Z$ materials made in the MuScat experiment showed that theoretical models and simulation codes, such as GEANT4 (v7.0), over-estimated the scattering. [...]
