Optimization Study of Beam Position and Angular Jitter Independent Bunch Length Monitor for Awake Run 2 / Davut, Can (U. Manchester (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; CERN) ; Apsimon, Oznur (U. Liverpool (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Karataev, Pavel (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Lefèvre, Thibaut (CERN) ; Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) ; Xia, Guoxing (U. Manchester (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.)
In this paper, a study using the Polarization Current Approach (PCA) model is performed to optimize the design of a short bunch length monitor using two dielectric radiators that produce coherent Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation (ChDR). The electromagnetic power emitted from each radiator is measuring a different part of the bunch spectrum using Schottky diodes. [...]

Analytical and Numerical Characterization of Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation as a Longitudinal Electron Bunch Profile Monitor for AWAKE Run 2 / Davut, Can (Manchester U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Apsimon, Oznur (Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Karataev, Pavel (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Lefèvre, Thibaut (CERN) ; Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) ; Xia, Guoxing (Manchester U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.)
In this paper, CST simulations of the coherent Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation with a range of parameters for different dielectric target materials and geometries are discussed and compared with the theoretical investigation of the Polarization Current Approach to design a prototype of a radiator for the bunch length/profile monitor for AWAKE Run 2. It was found that the result of PCA theory and CST simulation are consistent with each other regarding the shape of the emitted ChDR cone..

Carbon-based nanostructures and metamaterials offer extraordinary mechanical and opto-electrical properties, which make them suitable for applications in diverse fields, including, for example, bioscience, energy technology and quantum computing. In the latest years, important R&D; efforts have been made to investigate the potential use of graphene and carbon-nanotube (CNT) based structures to manipulate and accelerate particle beams. [...]

Manchester (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.)
AWAKE is a proton driven plasma wakefield acceleration experiment at CERN which uses the protons from the SPS. It aims to study the self modulation instability of a proton bunch and the acceleration of an externally injected electron beam in the plasma wakefields, during the so called Phase II until the technical stop of LHC and its injector chain (LS2) in 2019. Electron Beam Based Leather Tanning / Apsimon, Robert (Lancaster U. (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Dewhurst, Kay (Lancaster U. (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Wise, William (Unlisted, UK)
Tanning of leather for clothing, shoes, and handbags uses potentially harmful chemicals that often run off into local water supplies or require a large carbon footprint to safely recover these pollutants. In regions of the world with significant leather production, this can lead to a significant environmental impact. [...]

The CERN fixed target experimental areas have recently acquired new importance thanks to newly proposed experiments, such as those linked to Physics Beyond Colliders (PBC) activities. Secondary Emission Monitors (SEMs) are the instruments currently used for measuring beam current, position and size in these areas. [...]

In recent years the potential of using Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation (ChDR) as a tool for non-invasive beam diagnostics has been thoroughly investigated. Although several theoretical models of ChDR have been developed, differences in their assumptions result in inconsistent predictions. [...]

Amplitude enhancement of the self-modulated plasma wakefields / Li, Y. (Manchester U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Xia, G. (Manchester U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Lotov, K.V. (Novosibirsk, IYF ; Novosibirsk State U.) ; Sosedkin, A.P. (Novosibirsk, IYF ; Novosibirsk State U.) ; Zhao, Y. (Manchester U.) ; Gessner, S.J. (CERN)
Seeded Self-modulation (SSM) has been demonstrated to transform a long proton bunch into many equidistant micro-bunches (e.g., the AWAKE case), which then resonantly excite strong wakefields. However, the wakefields in a uniform plasma suffer from a quick amplitude drop after reaching the peak. [...]
