EFG temperature dependence in iodine and zinc–the message of two forgotten experiments / Haas, H (Aveiro U. ; CERN)
The electric-field gradient (EFG) for the simple halogen solids, according to the original Bayer theory, should have a continuous, quantitatively understood, decrease with temperature due to the vibrational motion of the molecules. In fact, the data for solid chlorine reproduce this prediction extremely well. [...]

Reanalyzed EFG temperature dependence for In, Sn, and Tl / Haas, H (Aveiro U. ; CERN) ; Röder, J (Aveiro U. ; CERN)
Existing experimental data of the nuclear quadrupole interaction frequency (ν$_{Q}$) for indium, tin, and thallium as function of temperature are analyzed as a product of the structural contribution multiplied by a Debye-Waller type factor with a system-specific proportionality constant. For the theoretical calculation of the structural effect the WIEN2k code is applied using the mostly well-known, but reanalyzed lattice parameters as function of temperature. [...]

The EFG at Hg and Cd for isolated molecules in frozen solution / Röder, J (Aveiro U. ; CERN) ; Haas, H (Aveiro U. ; CERN) ; Correia, J G (CERN ; Lisbon, IST) ; van Stiphout, K (Gottingen U., II. Phys. Inst.)
In order to obtain quantitative information about the changes of the EFG in closed-shell metal-organic molecules by the interactions with an inert matrix, two cases, dimethylmercury and dimethylcadmium, were measured using $^{199m}$Hg and $^{111m}$Cd PAC, respectively, in frozen diethyl ether and tetrahydrofuran. With the knowledge of high-accuracy nuclear quadrupole moments and available precision EFG values from quantum chemistry CCSD-T calculations the expected NQI frequencies of the free molecules are available and can be compared to the ones measured in the frozen solutions..

The electric field gradient as a signature of the binding and the local structure of adatoms on graphene / Fenta, A S (Leuven U. ; Aveiro U. ; CERN) ; Amorim, C O (Aveiro U.) ; Gonçalves, J N (Aveiro U.) ; Fortunato, N (Aveiro U.) ; Barbosa, M B (Porto U. ; Singapore Natl. U.) ; Cottenier, S (Gent U.) ; Correia, J G (CERN ; Lisbon, IST) ; Pereira, L M C (Leuven U.) ; Amaral, V S (Aveiro U.)
We examined the interaction between adatoms and graphene for Ag, Cd, In and Hg by density functional theory. We establish a relation between the binding energy and the electric-field gradient tensor (EFG) for each atom, which indicates that hyperfine interactions can be used to probe the binding and stability of adatoms on graphene. Temperature dependence of electric-field gradient in Zn and Cd: Replacing the T3/2 law / Haas, H (Aveiro U. ; CERN)
The existing experimental data for the temperature dependence of the nuclear quadrupole interaction in Zn and Cd have been accounted for by considering reanalyzed data for structure and vibrational amplitude as a function of temperature, in combination with density functional calculations of the electric-field gradient (EFG) variation due to the structure change. For Zn the complex EFG temperature effect, previously unexplained, can be fully reproduced, while for Cd it is shown that the apparent agreement with an earlier proposed universal temperature dependence as proportional to T3/2 is due to a combination of structural and vibrational contributions. Half-century old Berkeley idea now finding missing links of nuclear quadrupole moments / Haas, Heinz (Aveiro U. ; CERN)
There are basically two ways to determine precision values for nuclear quadrupole moments (Q): measurements for stable or reasonably long-lived (mostly ground) states by atomic and molecular spectroscopy and measurements for much shorter-lived excited states using nuclear condensed-matter techniques like Mössbauer or perturbed-angular distribution and correlation (PAC) spectroscopy. In all cases, the direct experimental result is the product of the electric-field gradient (EFG) at the nuclear site with Q. [...]

Confirming the Unusual Temperature Dependence of the Electric-Field Gradient in Zn / Haas, Heinz (Aveiro U. ; CERN) ; Zyabkin, Dmitry (Ilmenau Tech. The electric-field gradient (EFG) at nuclei in solids is a sensitive probe of the charge distribution. Experimental data, which previously only existed in insulators, have been available for metals with the development of nuclear measuring techniques since about 1970. [...]

New Phase Transition in the $Pr_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3}$ System : Evidence for Electrical Polarization in Charge Ordered Manganites / Lopes, A M (CERN ; Porto U. ; Aveiro U.) ; Araújo, J P (Porto U.) ; Amaral, V S (Aveiro U.) ; Correia, G (CERN ; ITN, Sacavem) ; Tomioka, Y (CERC, Tsukuba, Japan) ; Tokura, Y (Tokyo U.)
In this Letter a detailed study of the electric field gradient (EFG) across the Pr1-xCaxMnO3 phase diagram and its temperature dependence is given. Clearly, distinct EFG behavior for samples outside or inside the charge order (CO) region are observed. [...]

Lattice location and perturbed angular correlation studies of implanted Ag in SrTiO$_{3}$ / Marques, A C ; Wahl, Ulrich ; Correia, J G ; Rita, E ; Carvalho-Soares, João /ISOLDE Collaboration
Lattice site location and local environment characterization of implanted $^{111}\!$Ag in SrTiO$_{3}$ by means of the emission channeling (EC) and $\gamma$-$\gamma$-perturbed angular correlation (PAC) techniques are reported. The angular distribution of $\beta\!^{-}$-particles emitted from the $^{111}\!$Ag decay was monitored with a position-sensitive detector as a function of annealing temperature up to 900 ºC. [...]

Contactless doping characterization of ${\mathrm{Ga}_{2}\mathrm{O}_{3}}$ using acceptor Cd probes / Barbosa, Marcelo B (Porto U. ; Singapore Natl. Finding suitable p-type dopants, as well as reliable doping and characterization methods for the emerging wide bandgap semiconductor $\beta$-${\mathrm{Ga}_{2}\mathrm{O}_{3}}$ could strongly influence and contribute to the development of the next generation of power electronics. In this work, we combine easily accessible ion implantation, diffusion and nuclear transmutation methods to properly incorporate the Cd dopant into the $\beta$-${\mathrm{Ga}_{2}\mathrm{O}_{3}}$ lattice, being subsequently characterized at the atomic scale with the Perturbed Angular Correlation (PAC) technique and Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations.
