To better understand the role of aromatic hydrocarbons in new-particle formation, we measured the particle-phase abundance and volatility of oxidation products following the reaction of aromatic hydrocarbons with OH radicals. For this we used thermal desorption in an iodide-adduct Time-of-Flight Chemical-Ionization Mass Spectrometer equipped with a Filter Inlet for Gases and AEROsols (FIGAERO-ToF-CIMS). [...]

We use a real-time temperature-programmed desorption chemical-ionization mass spectrometer (FIGAERO–CIMS) to measure particle-phase composition and volatility of nucleated particles, studying pure α-pinene oxidation over a wide temperature range (−50 °C to +25 °C) in the CLOUD chamber at CERN. Highly oxygenated organic molecules are much more abundant in particles formed at higher temperatures, shifting the compounds toward higher O/C and lower intrinsic (300 K) volatility. [...]

Biogenic organic precursors play an important role
in atmospheric new particle formation (NPF). One of the major precursor species is α-pinene, which upon oxidation can
form a suite of products covering a wide range of volatilities.
Highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs) comprise a
fraction of the oxidation products formed [...]

Highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs)
contribute substantially to the formation and growth of atmospheric aerosol particles, which affect air quality, human
health and Earth’s climate. HOMs are formed by rapid, gasphase autoxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
such as α-pinene, the most abundant monoterpene in the atmosphere. [...]

Rapid growth of organic aerosol nanoparticles over a wide tropospheric temperature range

Nucleation and growth of aerosol particles from atmospheric vapors constitutes a major source of global cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). The fraction of newly formed particles that reaches CCN sizes is highly sensitive to particle growth rates, especially for particle sizes <10 nm, where coagulation losses to larger aerosol particles are greatest. Molecular characterization of ultrafine particles using extractive electrospray time-of-flight mass spectrometry

Aerosol particles negatively affect human health while also having climatic relevance due to, for example, their ability to act as cloud condensation nuclei. Ultrafine particles (diameter D$_p$ < 100 nm) typically comprise the largest fraction of the total number concentration, however, their chemical characterization is difficult because of their low mass. An intercomparison study of four different techniques for measuring the chemical composition of nanoparticles
/ Caudillo, Lucía (Frankfurt U., FIAS ; Frankfurt U.) ; Surdu, Mihnea (PSI, Villigen) ; Lopez, Brandon (Carnegie Mellon U.) ; Wang, Mingyi (Carnegie Mellon U. ; Caltech) ; Thoma, Markus (Frankfurt U., FIAS ; Frankfurt U.) ; Bräkling, Steffen (LLNL, Livermore) ; Buchholz, Angela (Aalto U.) ; Simon, Mario (Frankfurt U., FIAS ; Frankfurt U.) ; Wagner, Andrea C (Frankfurt U., FIAS ; Frankfurt U.) ; Müller, Tatjana (Frankfurt U., FIAS ; Frankfurt U. ; Mainz, Max Planck Inst.) et al.
Currently, the complete chemical characterization of nanoparticles
(< 100 nm) represents an analytical challenge, since these particles
are abundant in number but have negligible mass. Several methods for
particle-phase characterization have been recently developed to better
detect and infer more accurately the sources and fates of sub-100 nm
particles, but a detailed comparison of different approaches is missing.
Here we report on the chemical composition of secondary organic aerosol
(SOA) nanoparticles from experimental studies of α-pinene ozonolysis
at −50, −30, and −10 ∘C and intercompare the results measured by different
techniques. [...]

Observation of viscosity transition in α-pinene secondary organic aerosol

Under certain conditions, secondary organic aerosol (SOA) particles can exist in the atmosphere in an amorphous solid or semi-solid state. To determine their relevance to processes such as ice nucleation or chemistry occurring within particles requires knowledge of the temperature and relative humidity (RH) range for SOA to exist in these states. Elemental composition and clustering behaviour of α-pinene oxidation products for different oxidation conditions

This study presents the difference between oxidised organic compounds formed by α-pinene oxidation under various conditions in the CLOUD environmental chamber: (1) pure ozonolysis (in the presence of hydrogen as hydroxyl radical (OH) scavenger) and (2) OH oxidation (initiated by nitrous acid (HONO) photolysis by ultraviolet light) in the absence of ozone. We discuss results from three Atmospheric Pressure interface Time-of-Flight (APi-TOF) mass spectrometers measuring simultaneously the composition of naturally charged as well as neutral species (via chemical ionisation with nitrate).
