High Frequency RFQ Design and LEBT Matching for the CERN TwinEBIS Ion Source / Bencini, Vittorio (CERN) ; Breitenfeldt, Martin (CERN) ; Lallement, Jean-Baptiste (CERN) ; Lombardi, Alessandra (CERN) ; Pahl, Hannes (CERN) ; Pikin, Alexander (CERN) ; Pitters, Johanna (CERN) ; Wenander, Fredrik (CERN)
An Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS) is being developed at CERN for production of highly charged ions, for instance fully stripped $^{12}$C. The focus has so far been on the electron gun design, aiming for a high current compression, which results in a rapid ionisation process and thereby high repetition rate. [...]

A low energy ion beamline for TwinEBIS / Pahl, H (CERN ; Heidelberg U.) ; Bencini, V (CERN ; INFN, Rome ; Rome U.) ; Breitenfeldt, M (CERN ; ADAM, Geneva) ; Granadeiro Costa, A R (CERN ; IST, Lisbon (main)) ; Pikin, A (CERN ; Brookhaven Natl. Lab.) ; Pitters, J (CERN) ; Wenander, F (CERN)
A low energy beamline has been designed for the TwinEBIS setup. The beamline will be used to transport ions extracted from the electron beam ion source into an accelerating radio frequency quadrupole or into secondary devices, like a time of flight-mass spectrometer, attached to the beamline via a fast three way 20° ion switchyard. MEDeGUN commissioning results / Breitenfeldt, M (CERN) ; di Lorenzo, F (CERN) ; Pikin, A (Brookhaven Natl. Lab.) ; Pitters, J (CERN) ; Wenander, F (CERN)
MEDeGUN [1] is an electron gun to be used in an Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS) designed to serve as C6+ source for LINAC-based 2nd generation hadron therapy facilities [2]. The latter require short pulses of at least 1*108 particles at a repetition rate of 400 Hz, which exceeds the possibilities of currently used electron cyclotron resonance ion sources (ECRIS) and EBISes. [...]

Adaption of the HSI-RFQ RF-properties to an improved beam dynamics layout / Vossberg, Markus (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Bencini, Vittorio (CERN) ; Garland, James (CERN) ; Groening, Lars (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Lallement, Jean-Baptiste (CERN) ; Lombardi, Alessandra (CERN) ; Mickat, Sascha (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Vormann, Hartmut (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Xiao, Chen (Darmstadt, GSI)
The GSI accelerator facility comprising the linear accelerator UNILAC and the synchrotron SIS18 will be used in future mainly as the injector for the Facility for Anti-Proton and Ion Research (FAIR) being under construction. FAIR requires high beam brilliance and the UNILAC's RFQ electrodes must be upgraded with respect to their beam dynamics design. [...]

A high-compression electron gun for C$^{6+}$ production: concept, simulations and mechanical design / Mertzig, Robert (CERN ; Dresden, Tech. U.) ; Breitenfeldt, M (CERN) ; Mathot, S (CERN) ; Pitters, J (CERN ; TU Vienna) ; Shornikov, A (U. Manchester (main) ; GANIL) ; Wenander, F (CERN)
In this paper we report on simulations and the mechanical design of a high-compression electron gun for an Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS) dedicated for production of high intensity and high repetition rate pulses of bare carbon ions for injection into linac-based hadron therapy facilities. The gun is presently under construction at CERN to be retrofitted into the TwinEBIS test bench for experimental studies. [...]

TwinEBIS is an Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS) recently made operational at CERN. The device is similar in construction to the REXEBIS charge breeder operating at the ISOLDE facility. [...]

Electron gun producing beams with controllable current density / Pikin, Alexander (CERN ; Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Bencini, Vittorio (CERN) ; Pahl, Hannes (CERN ; Heidelberg U.) ; Wenander, Fredrik (CERN)
The existing Brillouin-type electron gun at the TwinEBIS test bench is, according to Herrmann theory, capable of producing an electron beam with a current density of 3850 A/cm$^{2}$ in the 2 T solenoid. To control the electron beam current density and the magnetic flux inside the beam, the existing electron gun - now using purely electrostatic focusing - can be modified by permitting magnetic flux to reach the cathode. Activities at the Linac4 Test Stand / Lallement, Jean-Baptiste (CERN) ; Bencini, Vittorio (CERN) ; Bertolo, Sebastien (CERN) ; Di Lorenzo, Francesco (CERN) ; Lettry, Jacques (CERN) ; Lombardi, Alessandra (CERN) ; Mastrostefano, Cristiano (CERN) ; Noll, Daniel (CERN) ; O'Neil, Michael (CERN)
Linac4, the new CERN H$^-$ injector to the Proton Synchrotron Booster, has been commissioned and has delivered a beam intensity and quality calculated to be sufficient to produce the standard beams for LHC and the high intensity beams for ISOLDE when connected. The beam current is nevertheless half of what is foreseen and the problem has been identified at the low energy end, between the extraction and the matching to the RFQ. [...]

RFQ electrodes change and upgrade option at the UNILAC HSI injector / Vossberg, Markus (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Bencini, Vittorio (CERN) ; Garland, James (CERN) ; Gerhard, Peter (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Groening, Lars (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Lallement, Jean-Baptiste (CERN) ; Lombardi, Alessandra (CERN) ; Mickat, Sascha (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Vormann, Hartmut (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Xiao, Chen (Darmstadt, GSI)
In order to meet the beam intensity and quality requirements imposed by FAIR, the HSI-RFQ beam dynamics originally dating from 2009 has been re-designed recently at CERN. Front-to-end simulations demonstrated that the new design meets the FAIR targets. [...]
