Impedance reduction of the beam gas ionization monitors for the CERN SPS / Bursali, Hikmet (CERN) ; Andreazza, William (CERN) ; Khatri, Ghanshyambhai (CERN) ; Ramos Garcia, Maria Teresa (CERN) ; Storey, James (CERN) ; Vollenberg, Wil (CERN) ; Vollinger, Christine (CERN)
The beam gas ionization monitors (BGIs) are non-destructive instruments to measure the transverse beam profiles. With the goal to double the beam intensity in the injector chain for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), any element contributing to the overall beam coupling impedance requires an in-depth impedance evaluation from the design stage. High-density gas target at the LHCb experiment / Boente Garcia, O. (LLR, Palaiseau) ; Bregliozzi, G. (CERN) ; Calegari, D. (CERN) ; Carassiti, V. (INFN, Ferrara) ; Ciullo, G. (INFN, Ferrara ; Ferrara U.) ; Coco, V. (CERN) ; Collins, P. (CERN) ; Pinto, P. Costa (CERN) ; De Angelis, C. (Cagliari U. ; INFN, Cagliari) ; Di Nezza, P. (Frascati) et al.
The recently installed internal gas target at LHCb presents exceptional opportunities for an extensive physics program for heavy-ion, hadron, spin, and astroparticle physics. A storage cell placed in the LHC primary vacuum, an advanced Gas Feed System, the availability of multi-TeV proton and ion beams and the recent upgrade of the LHCb detector make this project unique worldwide. Beam-Impact Validation of HL-LHC Collimator Materials: the "MultiMat-2" Experiment / Carra, F (CERN) ; Accettura, C (CERN) ; Bertarelli, A (CERN) ; Berthomé, E (CERN) ; Bruce, R (CERN) ; Charitonidis, N (CERN) ; Dalemir, M (CERN) ; Farina, E (CERN) ; Guardia-Valenzuela, J (CERN) ; Guinchard, M (CERN) et al.
In 2017, a proton-impact test HL-LHC collimator materials was carried out in the HiRadMat facility at CERN. The experiment, called “MultiMat”, enabled the testing of bulk and coated materials developed at CERN for different beam collimation functionalities. [...]

Dielectric resonator to measure surface resistance of accelerator components at room temperature and 77 K / Brunner, Kristóf (CERN) ; Krkotić, Patrick (CERN) ; Pinto, Pedro Costa (CERN) ; Diaz-Rato, Eduardo Gibbons (CERN) ; Pfeiffer, Stephan (CERN) ; Vollenberg, Wilhelmus (CERN) ; Calatroni, Sergio (CERN) ; Barna, Dániel (Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; Pont, Montse (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; O'Callaghan, Joan (Barcelona, Polytechnic U.)
We measured the surface resistance of titanium, amorphous carbon, and nonevaporable getter (NEG) coatings on copper samples, representative of surface treatments of beam-facing components in the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Measurements were done at room temperature as well as at liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K) by means of a novel large dielectric resonator operating at 3.4 GHz. [...]

Efficient Combination of Surface Texturing and Functional Coating for Very Low Secondary Electron Yield Surfaces and Rough Nonevaporable Getter Films / Himmerlich, Marcel (CERN) ; Zanin, Danilo A (CERN) ; Taborelli, Mauro (CERN) ; Granadeiro Costa, Angelo Rafael (CERN) ; Costa Pinto, Pedro (CERN) ; Lain Amador, Lucia (CERN) ; Vollenberg, Wilhelmus (CERN) ; Baris, Adrienn (CERN) ; Garcia‐Tabares Valdivieso, Elisa (CERN ; Carlos III U., Madrid) ; Perez Fontenla, Ana Teresa (CERN) et al.
The formation of a fissured copper surface by picosecond pulsed laser irradiation is combined with functional coatings consisting of Ti and amorphous carbon layers or a Ti–Zr–V compound film to fabricate surfaces with the maximum of the secondary electron yield being as low as 0.4. By structural and spectroscopic analysis of the formed surfaces it is demonstrated that both coatings enclose the nanostructures generated by redeposition of metal structures from the laser-induced plasma plume, keeping the initial topography intact. Experiments to improve the performance of the GTS-LHC ECR ion source / Kövener, T (CERN) ; Küchler, D (CERN) ; Mahner, E (CERN) ; Scrivens, R (CERN) ; Baris, A (CERN) ; Pfeiffer, S (CERN) ; Mourier, L (CERN) ; Vollenberg, W (CERN)
The GTS-LHC 14.5 GHz ECR ion source provides the ion beam, which after acceleration in the ion injector complex, is injected into the LHC, as well as being sent to fixed target experiments at CERN. Two experiments have been performed on the source. [...]

Detailed Electromagnetic Characterisation of HL-LHC Low Impedance Collimators / Kurtulus, Adnan (CERN ; ETH, Zurich (main)) ; Accentura, Carlotta (CERN) ; Biancacci, Nicolo (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Caspers, Fritz (CERN) ; Chitnis, Ninad (CERN) ; Giordano, Francesco (CERN) ; Illan Fiastre, Ricardo (CERN) ; Joly, Sébastien (CERN) ; Lamas Garcia, Inigo (CERN) et al.
The High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) project will upgrade the LHC machine to allow operation with increased luminosity for the experiments. In order to achieve this goal, different operational parameters of the machine need to be pushed beyond the present design values, including the stored beam energy. [...]

Amorphous Carbon Coating in SPS / Vollenberg, Wil (CERN) ; Chiggiato, Paolo (CERN) ; Costa Pinto, Pedro (CERN) ; Cruikshank, Paul (CERN) ; Moreno, Harold (CERN) ; Pasquino, Chiara (CERN) ; Perez Espinos, Jaime (CERN) ; Taborelli, Mauro (CERN)
Within the LHC Injector Upgrade (LIU) project, the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) needs to be upgraded to inject into the LHC higher intensity and brighter 25-ns bunch spaced beams. To mitigate the Electron Multipacting (E.M.) phenomenon, a well-known limiting factor for high-intensity positively charged beams, CERN developed carbon coatings with a low Secondary Electron Yield (SEY).
