Particle Identification: Time-of-Flight, Cherenkov and Transition Radiation Detectors / Forty, Roger (CERN) ; Ullaland, Olav (CERN)
Particle identification, PID, is of crucial importance in most experiments. The requirement can range from positive π/K identification in B-physics channels like B\(^0_{\mathrm {s}}\rightarrow \)D\(^\mp _{\mathrm {s}}\)K± against a background from B\(^0_{\mathrm {s}}\rightarrow \)D\(^-_{\mathrm {s}}\pi ^+\) which is ∼15 times more abundant, to e/π separation at the level of ∼ 10−2 for momenta > 1 GeV/c in order to effectively suppress a combinatorial background in channels like leptonic decays of heavy vector resonances..

The Future of RICH Detectors through the Light of the LHCb RICH / D'Ambrosio, C. (CERN) ; Cardinale, R. ; Easo, S. ; Petrolini, A. ; Ullaland, O. /LHCb RICH ; LHCb RICH Collaboration
The limitations in performance of the present RICH system in the LHCb experiment are given by the natural chromatic dispersion of the gaseous Cherenkov radiator, the aberrations of the optical system and the pixel size of the photon detectors. Moreover, the overall PID performance can be affected by high detector occupancy as the pattern recognition becomes more difficult with high particle multiplicities. [...]

Quenching the scintillation in CF$_4$ Cherenkov gas radiator / Blake, T (Warwick U.) ; D׳Ambrosio, C (CERN) ; Easo, S (Rutherford ; CERN) ; Eisenhardt, S (Edinburgh U.) ; Fitzpatrick, C (LPHE, Lausanne) ; Forty, R (CERN) ; Frei, C (CERN) ; Gibson, V (Cambridge U.) ; Gys, T (CERN) ; Harnew, N (Oxford U.) et al.
CF 4 is used as a Cherenkov gas radiator in one of the Ring Imaging Cherenkov detectors at the LHCb experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. CF 4 is well known to have a high scintillation photon yield in the near and far VUV, UV and in the visible wavelength range. [...]

Updated DIRAC spectrometer at CERN PS for the investigation of ππ and πK atoms / PS212 collaboration
The DIRAC spectrometer installed at CERN PS was redesigned and upgraded in order to study simultaneously Aππ and AπK atoms, namely the bound states of π+π–, and π+K–, π–K+ mesons. The detector system which is able to accept a high intensity beam such as 2 - 6 × 1011 primary protons per second, the electronics and the data-acquisition system adapted to handle very large amount of data actually allowed to identify successfully π, K, p, e and µ and to give the possibility to select π-π and π-K pairs in the off-line analysis. Implications of LHCb measurements and future prospects / LHCb Collaboration
During 2011 the LHCb experiment at CERN collected $1.0 {\mbox{fb}^{-1}}$ of $\sqrt{s} = 7 {\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}}$ $pp$ collisions. Due to the large heavy quark production cross-sections, these data provide unprecedented samples of heavy flavoured hadrons. [...]
