An intercomparison study of four different techniques for measuring the chemical composition of nanoparticles / Caudillo, Lucía (Frankfurt U., FIAS ; Frankfurt U.) ; Surdu, Mihnea (PSI, Villigen) ; Lopez, Brandon (Carnegie Mellon U.) ; Wang, Mingyi (Carnegie Mellon U. ; Caltech) ; Thoma, Markus (Frankfurt U., FIAS ; Frankfurt U.) ; Bräkling, Steffen (LLNL, Livermore) ; Buchholz, Angela (Aalto U.) ; Simon, Mario (Frankfurt U., FIAS ; Frankfurt U.) ; Wagner, Andrea C (Frankfurt U., FIAS ; Frankfurt U.) ; Müller, Tatjana (Frankfurt U., FIAS ; Frankfurt U. ; Mainz, Max Planck Inst.) et al.
Currently, the complete chemical characterization of nanoparticles (< 100 nm) represents an analytical challenge, since these particles are abundant in number but have negligible mass. Several methods for particle-phase characterization have been recently developed to better detect and infer more accurately the sources and fates of sub-100 nm particles, but a detailed comparison of different approaches is missing. Here we report on the chemical composition of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) nanoparticles from experimental studies of α-pinene ozonolysis at −50, −30, and −10 ∘C and intercompare the results measured by different techniques. Quantum Field Theoretic Description of Matter in the Universe / Thoma, Markus H. (CERN)
Quantum field theory at finite temperature and density can be used for describing the physics of relativistic plasmas. Such systems are frequently encountered in astrophysical situations, such as the early Universe, Supernova explosions, and the interior of neutron stars. [...]

Hard Thermal Photon Production in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions / Steffen, Frank D. (Heidelberg U.) ; Thoma, Markus H. (CERN)
The recent status of hard thermal photon production in relativistic heavy ion collisions is reviewed and the current rates are presented with emphasis on corrected bremsstrahlung processes in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and quark-hadron duality. Employing Bjorken hydrodynamics with an EOS supporting the phase transition from QGP to hot hadron gas (HHG), thermal photon spectra are computed. [...]

New Developments and Applications of Thermal Field Theory / Thoma, Markus H. (CERN)
The lecture provides an introduction to thermal field theory and its applications to the physics of the quark-gluon plasma, possibly created in relativistic heavy ion collisions. [...]

Neutrino-electron processes in a strongly magnetized thermal plasma / Hardy, Stephen J. (Garching, Max Planck Inst. ; Sydney U.) ; Thoma, Markus H. (CERN ; Giessen U.)
We present a new method of calculating the rate of neutrino-electron interactions in a strong magnetic field based on finite temperature field theory. Using this method, in which the effect of the magnetic field on the electron states is taken into account exactly, we calculate the rates of all of the lowest order neutrino-electron interactions in a plasma. Van Hove Singularities in the Quark-Gluon Plasma / Thoma, Markus H. (CERN)
General arguments as well as different approximations for the in-medium quark propagator in a quark-gluon plasma lead to quark dispersion relations that exhibit a minimum in one branch (plasmino). This minimum causes Van Hove singularities in the dilepton production rate and mesonic correlators, which might have observable consequences..

Photon-Photon Interaction in a Photon Gas / Thoma, Markus H. (CERN ; Giessen U.)
Using the effective Lagrangian for the low energy photon-photon interaction the lowest order photon self energy at finite temperature and in non-equilibrium is calculated within the real time formalism. The Debye mass, the dispersion relation, the dielectric tensor, and the velocity of light following from the photon self energy are discussed. [...]

Leontovich Relations in Thermal Field Theory / Thoma, Markus H. (CERN)
The application of generalized Kramers-Kronig relations, the so-called Leontovich relations, to thermal field theory is discussed. Medium effects contained in the full, thermal propagators can easily be taken into account by this method. [...]

Collisional Energy Loss of Fast Charged Particles in Relativistic Plasmas / Thoma, Markus H. (CERN)
Following an argument by Kirzhnits we rederive an exact expression for the energy loss of a fast charged particle in a relativistic plasma using the quantum field theoretical language. We compare this result to perturbative calculations of the collisional energy loss of an energetic electron or muon in an electron-positron plasma and of an energetic parton in the quark-gluon plasma..

Bremsstrahlung from an Equilibrating Quark-Gluon Plasma / Mustafa, Munshi G. (Giessen U.) ; Thoma, Markus H. (CERN)
The photon production rate from a chemically equilibrating quark-gluon plasma likely to be produced at RHIC (BNL) and LHC (CERN) energies is estimated taking into account bremsstrahlung. The plasma is assumed to be in local thermal equilibrium, but with a phase space distribution that deviates from the Fermi or Bose distribution by space-time dependent factors (fugacities). [...]
