Mechanical stress analysis during a quench in CLIQ protected 16 T dipole magnets designed for the future circular collider / Zhao, Junjie (Lanzhou U.) ; Prioli, Marco (CERN) ; Stenvall, Antti (Tampere U. of Tech.) ; Salmi, Tiina (Tampere U. of Tech.) ; Gao, Yuanwen (Lanzhou U.) ; Caiffi, Barbara (INFN, Genoa) ; Lorin, Clement (Saclay) ; Marinozzi, Vittorio (Milan Bicocca U. ; INFN, Milan) ; Farinon, Stefania (INFN, Genoa) ; Sorbi, Massimo (Milan Bicocca U. ; INFN, Milan)
Protecting the magnets in case of a quench is a challenge for the 16 T superconducting dipole magnets presently designed for the 100 TeV: Future Circular Collider (FCC). These magnets are driven to the foreseen technological limits in terms of critical current, mechanical strength and quench protection. [...]

Quench protection of the 16 T Nb3Sn dipole magnets designed for the Future Circular Collider / Salmi, Tiina (Tampere U. of Tech.) ; Prioli, Marco (CERN) ; Stenvall, Antti (Tampere U. of Tech.) ; Verweij, Arjan P (CERN)
Three different 16 T dipole magnet options for the Future Circular Collider (FCC) have been designed within the H2020 EuroCirCol collaboration, namely a cosθ-, a block-, and a common-coil -type of magnet. All magnets were designed using the same constraints related to magnetic field, cable parameters, mechanics, and quench protection. [...]

How to Computationally Determine the Maximum Stable Operation Current of an HTS Magnet / Ruuskanen, Janne (Tampere U. of Tech.) ; Stenvall, Antti (Tampere U. of Tech.) ; Lahtinen, Valtteri (Tampere U. of Tech.) ; van Nugteren, Jeroen (CERN) ; Kirby, Glyn (CERN) ; Murtomäki, Jaakko (Tampere U. of Tech.)
The short-sample critical current is only an indicative property for the maximum current a magnet can be continuously operated with. This was especially visible in the experiments of one of the world's first Roebel-cable-based high temperature superconductors dipole magnet prototype built and tested at CERN in 2017 where the thermal runaway developed very slowly in many cases. [...]

3-D Mechanical Modeling of 20 T HTS Clover Leaf End Coils—Good Practices and Lessons Learned / Murtomäki, Jaakko Samuel (CERN ; Tampere U. of Tech.) ; van Nugteren, Jeroen (CERN) ; Stenvall, Antti (Tampere U. of Tech.) ; Kirby, Glyn (CERN) ; Rossi, Lucio (CERN)
Very high electromagnetic forces are generated in the superconducting coils of high field accelerator magnets. The cables, which are used to wind the coils, can withstand limited pressure levels and strains generated during the powering without degradation. [...]

10 kA Joints for HTS Roebel Cables / Murtomaki, Jaakko Samuel (CERN) ; Kirby, Glyn (CERN) ; van Nugteren, Jeroen (CERN) ; Contat, Pierre-Antoine (CERN) ; Sacristan-de-Frutos, Oscar (CERN) ; Fleiter, Jerome (CERN) ; Pincot, Francois-Olivier (CERN) ; de Rijk, Gijs (CERN) ; Rossi, Lucio (CERN) ; Ruuskanen, Janne (Tampere U. of Tech.) et al.
Future high temperature superconductor (HTS) high field magnets using multitape HTS cables need 10-kA low-resistance connections. The connections are needed between the poles of the magnets and at the terminals in a wide-operating temperature range, from 1.9-85 K. [...]

Investigation of REBCO Roebel Cable Irreversible Critical Current Degradation Under Transverse Pressure / Murtomaki, Jaakko Samuel (CERN) ; Kouhia, Reijo (Tampere U. of Tech.) ; Stenvall, Antti (Tampere U. of Tech.) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN) ; Kirby, Glyn (CERN) ; van Nugteren, Jeroen (CERN) ; de Rijk, Gijs (CERN) ; Rossi, Lucio (CERN)
The Roebel cable utilized in High Field accelerator magnets is subject to high transversal electromagnetic forces. The conductor response to exerted pressure depends from the geometry and materials of the cable. [...]

ICED—Inductively Coupled Energy Dissipater for Future High-Field Accelerator Magnets / Murtomäki, Jaakko Samuel (CERN) ; van Nugteren, Jeroen (CERN) ; Kirby, Glyn (CERN) ; de Rijk, Gijs (CERN) ; Rossi, Lucio (CERN) ; Stenvall, Antti (Tampere U. of Tech.)
Future high-field accelerator magnets, like the ones foreseen in the design study of the FCC project and for the EuCARD2 “Future Magnets” program, operate with magnetic fields in the range of 16-20 T. For such magnets the energy density is higher than in the accelerator magnets at present in operation, posing a challenge for the quench protection. [...]

ReBCO high temperature superconducting (HTS) coated conductor tapes are a promising candidate for pushing the magnetic fields in accelerator magnets well beyond 20 T. They are capable of very high current densities in intense applied magnetic field, have a very high thermal stability, can withstand high transverse pressures and allow operation in 20–30 K helium gas flow, potentially reducing operating cost significantly. Status of the 16 T Dipole Development Program for a Future Hadron Collider / Tommasini, Davide (CERN) ; Arbelaez, Diego (LBL, Berkeley) ; Auchmann, Bernhard (CERN) ; Bajas, Hugues (CERN) ; Bajko, Marta (CERN) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Barzi, Emanuela (Fermilab) ; Bellomo, Giovanni (INFN, Milan) ; Benedikt, Michael (CERN) ; Izquierdo Bermudez, Susana (CERN) et al.
A next step of energy increase of hadron colliders beyond the LHC requires high-field superconducting magnets capable of providing a dipolar field in the range of 16 T in a 50-mm aperture with accelerator quality. These characteristics could meet the requirements for an upgrade of the LHC to twice the present beam energy or for a 100-TeV center of mass energy future circular collider. [...]
