Determination of the collision rate coefficient between charged iodic acid clusters and iodic acid using the appearance time method / He, Xu-Cheng (U. Helsinki (main)) ; Iyer, Siddharth (U. Helsinki (main)) ; Sipilä, Mikko (U. Helsinki (main)) ; Ylisirniö, Arttu (UEF, Kuopio) ; Peltola, Maija (Helsinki U.) ; Kontkanen, Jenni (Helsinki U.) ; Baalbaki, Rima (Helsinki U.) ; Simon, Mario (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Kürten, Andreas (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Tham, Yee Jun (Helsinki U.) et al.
Ions enhance the formation rate of atmospheric aerosol particles, which play an important role in Earth’s radiative balance. Ion-induced nucleation involves the stepwise accretion of neutral monomers onto a molecular cluster containing an ion, which helps to stabilize the cluster against evaporation. [...]

Formation of Highly Oxygenated Organic Molecules from $\alpha$-Pinene Ozonolysis: Chemical Characteristics, Mechanism, and Kinetic Model Development / Molteni, Ugo (PSI, Villigen) ; Simon, Mario (Frankfurt U.) ; Heinritzi, Martin (Frankfurt U.) ; Hoyle, Christopher R (PSI, Villigen) ; Bernhammer, Anne-Kathrin (Ionicon GesmbH, Innsbruck) ; Bianchi, Federico (Helsinki U.) ; Breitenlechner, Martin (Innsbruck U.) ; Brilke, Sophia (Frankfurt U.) ; Dias, António (Lisbon U.) ; Duplissy, Jonathan (Helsinki U. ; Helsinki Inst. of Phys.) et al.
Terpenes are emitted by vegetation, and their oxidation in the atmosphere is an important source of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). A part of this oxidation can proceed through an autoxidation process, yielding highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs) with low saturation vapor pressure. [...]

Colorado, Boulder) ; Pichelstorfer, Lukas (Helsinki U.) ; Nieminen, Tuomo (Helsinki U.) et al.
In the present-day atmosphere, sulfuric acid is the most important vapour for aerosol particle formation and initial growth. However, the growth rates of nanoparticles ( < 10 nm) from sulfuric acid remain poorly measured. [...]

Molecular understanding of new-particle formation from $\alpha$-pinene between −50 and +25 °C / Simon, Mario (Frankfurt U.) ; Dada, Lubna (Helsinki U.) ; Heinritzi, Martin (Frankfurt U.) ; Scholz, Wiebke (Innsbruck U.) ; Stolzenburg, Dominik (Vienna U.) ; Fischer, Lukas (Innsbruck U.) ; Wagner, Andrea C (Frankfurt U. ; U. Colorado, Boulder) ; Kürten, Andreas (Frankfurt U.) ; Rörup, Birte (Helsinki U.) ; He, Xu-Cheng (Helsinki U.) et al.
Highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs) contribute substantially to the formation and growth of atmospheric aerosol particles, which affect air quality, human health and Earth’s climate. HOMs are formed by rapid, gasphase autoxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as α-pinene, the most abundant monoterpene in the atmosphere. [...]

Molecular understanding of the suppression of new-particle formation by isoprene / Heinritzi, Martin (Frankfurt U.) ; Dada, Lubna (Helsinki U.) ; Simon, Mario (Frankfurt U.) ; Stolzenburg, Dominik (Vienna U.) ; Wagner, Andrea C (Frankfurt U. ; U. Colorado, Boulder) ; Fischer, Lukas (Innsbruck U.) ; Ahonen, Lauri R (Helsinki U.) ; Amanatidis, Stavros (Caltech, Pasadena (main)) ; Baalbaki, Rima (Helsinki U.) ; Baccarini, Andrea (PSI, Villigen) et al.
Nucleation of atmospheric vapours produces more than half of global cloud condensation nuclei and so has an important influence on climate. Recent studies show that monoterpene (C$_{10}$H$_{16}$) oxidation yields highly oxygenated products that can nucleate with or without sulfuric acid. [...]

Iodic acid (HIO3) is known to form aerosol particles in coastal marine regions, but predicted nucleation and growth rates are lacking. Using the CERN CLOUD (Cosmics Leaving Outdoor Droplets) chamber, we find that the nucleation rates of HIO3 particles are rapid, even exceeding sulfuric acid–ammonia rates under similar conditions. A new high-transmission inlet for the Caltech nano-RDMA for size distribution measurements of sub-3 nm ions at ambient concentrations / Franchin, Alessandro (Helsinki U.) ; Downard, Andy (Caltech, Pasadena (main)) ; Kangasluoma, Juha (Helsinki U.) ; Nieminen, Tuomo (Helsinki U. ; Helsinki Inst. of Phys. ; UEF, Kuopio) ; Lehtipalo, Katrianne (Helsinki U. ; Airmodus Ltd, Helsinki) ; Steiner, Gerhard (U. Vienna (main) ; Innsbruck U.) ; Manninen, Hanna E (Helsinki U.) ; Petäjä, Tuukka (Helsinki U.) ; Flagan, Richard C (Caltech, Pasadena (main)) ; Kulmala, Markku (Helsinki U.)
Reliable and reproducible measurements of atmospheric aerosol particle number size distributions below 10 nm require optimized classification instruments with high particle transmission efficiency. Almost all differential mobility analyzers (DMAs) have an unfavorable potential gradient at the outlet (e.g., long column, Vienna type) or at the inlet (nano-radial DMA), preventing them from achieving a good transmission efficiency for the smallest nanoparticles. Characterization of the mass-dependent transmission efficiency of a CIMS / Heinritzi, Martin (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Simon, Mario (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Steiner, Gerhard (U. Vienna (main) ; Innsbruck U.) ; Wagner, Andrea C (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Kürten, Andreas (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Hansel, Armin (Innsbruck U.) ; Curtius, Joachim (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main))
Knowledge about mass discrimination effects in a chemical ionization mass spectrometer (CIMS) is crucial for quantifying, e.g., the recently discovered extremely low volatile organic compounds (ELVOCs) and other compounds for which no calibration standard exists so far. Here, we present a simple way of estimating mass discrimination effects of a nitrate-based chemical ionization atmospheric pressure interface time-of-flight (CI-APi-TOF) mass spectrometer. [...]

A DMA-train for precision measurement of sub-10 nm aerosol dynamics / Stolzenburg, Dominik (U. Vienna (main)) ; Steiner, Gerhard (U. Vienna (main) ; Innsbruck U.) ; Winkler, Paul M (U. Vienna (main))
Measurements of aerosol dynamics in the sub-10 nm size range are crucially important for quantifying the impact of new particle formation onto the global budget of cloud condensation nuclei. Here we present the development and characterization of a differential mobility analyzer train (DMA-train), operating six DMAs in parallel for high-time-resolution particle-size-distribution measurements below 10 nm.
