Laboratory realization of relativistic pair-plasma beams / Arrowsmith, C.D. (Oxford U.) ; Simon, P. (CERN ; Darmstadt, GSI) ; Bilbao, P.J. (Lisbon, IST) ; Bott, A.F. A. (Oxford U.) ; Burger, S. (CERN) ; Chen, H. (LLNL, Livermore) ; Cruz, F.D. (Lisbon, IST) ; Davenne, T. (Rutherford) ; Efthymiopoulos, I. (CERN) ; Froula, D.H. (Rochester U.) et al.
Relativistic electron-positron plasmas are ubiquitous in extreme astrophysical environments such as black holes and neutron star magnetospheres, where accretion-powered jets and pulsar winds are expected to be enriched with such pair plasmas. Their behaviour is quite different from typical electron-ion plasmas due to the matter-antimatter symmetry of the charged components and their role in the dynamics of such compact objects is believed to be fundamental. Plasma accelerators present one of the most suitable candidates for the development of more compact particle acceleration technologies, yet they still lag behind radiofrequency (RF)-based devices when it comes to beam quality, control, stability and power efficiency. The Horizon 2020-funded project EuPRAXIA (“European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications”) aims to overcome the first three of these hurdles by developing a conceptual design for a first international user facility based on plasma acceleration. Analysis of Proton Bunch Parameters in the AWAKE Experiment / AWAKE Collaboration
A precise characterization of the incoming proton bunch parameters is required to accurately simulate the self-modulation process in the Advanced Wakefield Experiment (AWAKE). This paper presents an analysis of the parameters of the incoming proton bunches used in the later stages of the AWAKE Run 1 data-taking period. [...]

Simulation and Experimental Study of Proton Bunch Self-Modulation in Plasma with Linear Density Gradients / AWAKE Collaboration
We present numerical simulations and experimental results of the self-modulation of a long proton bunch in a plasma with linear density gradients along the beam path. Simulation results agree with the experimental results reported in arXiv:2007.14894v2: with negative gradients, the charge of the modulated bunch is lower than with positive gradients. [...]

Transition between Instability and Seeded Self-Modulation of a Relativistic Particle Bunch in Plasma / AWAKE Collaboration
We use a relativistic ionization front to provide various initial transverse wakefield amplitudes for the self-modulation of a long proton bunch in plasma. We show experimentally that, with sufficient initial amplitude ($\ge(4.1\pm0.4)$ MV/m), the phase of the modulation along the bunch is reproducible from event to event, with 3 to 7% (of 2$\pi$) rms variations all along the bunch. Generating ultra-dense pair beams using 400 GeV/c protons / Arrowsmith, C.D. (Oxford U.) ; Shukla, N. (CINECA) ; Charitonidis, N. (CERN) ; Boni, R. (Rochester U.) ; Chen, H. (LLNL, Livermore) ; Davenne, T. (Rutherford) ; Dyson, A. (Oxford U.) ; Froula, D.H. (Rochester U.) ; Gudmundsson, J.T. (Iceland U. ; Royal Inst. Tech., Stockholm) ; Huffman, B.T. (Oxford U.) et al.
A previously unexplored experimental scheme is presented for generating low-divergence, ultra-dense, relativistic, electron-positron beams using 400 GeV/c protons available at facilities such as HiRadMat and AWAKE at CERN. Preliminary Monte-Carlo and Particle-in-cell simulations demonstrate the possibility of generating beams containing $10^{13}-10^{14}$ electron-positron pairs at sufficiently high densities to drive collisionless beam-plasma instabilities, which are expected to play an important role in magnetic field generation and the related radiation signatures of relativistic astrophysical phenomena. Experimental study of extended timescale dynamics of a plasma wakefield driven by a self-modulated proton bunch / AWAKE Collaboration
Plasma wakefield dynamics over timescales up to 800 ps, approximately 100 plasma periods, are studied experimentally at the Advanced Wakefield Experiment (AWAKE). The development of the longitudinal wakefield amplitude driven by a self-modulated proton bunch is measured using the external injection of witness electrons that sample the fields. [...]
