Settings for Improved Betatron Collimation in the First Run of the High Luminosity LHC / Lindström, Bjorn (CERN) ; Abramov, Andrey (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; De Maria, Riccardo (CERN) ; Hermes, Pascal (CERN) ; Molson, James (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Van der Veken, Frederik (CERN)
The current betatron collimation system in the LHC is not optimized to absorb off-momentum particles scattered out from the primary collimators. The highest losses are concentrated in the downstream dispersion suppressor (DS). [...]

Experimental Test of a New Method to Verify Retraction Margins Between Dump Absorbers and Tertiary Collimators at the LHC / Wiesner, Christoph (CERN) ; Bartmann, Wolfgang (CERN) ; Bracco, Chiara (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Molson, James (CERN) ; Schaumann, Michaela (CERN) ; Staufenbiel, Christian (CERN) ; Uythoven, Jan (CERN) ; Valette, Matthieu (CERN) ; Wenninger, Jorg (CERN) et al.
The protection of the tertiary collimators (TCTs) and the LHC triplet aperture in case of a so-called asynchronous beam dump relies on the correct retraction between the TCTs and the dump region absorbers. A new method to validate this retraction has been proposed, and a proof-of-principle experiment was performed at the LHC. [...]

Collimation Strategies for Secondary Beams in FCC-hh Ion-Ion Operation / Hunt, James (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Cerutti, Francesco (CERN) ; Guardia-Valenzuela, Jorge (CERN) ; Molson, James (CERN)
The target peak luminosity of the CERN FCC-hh during Pb-Pb collisions is more than a factor of 50 greater than that achieved by the LHC in 2018. As a result, the intensity of secondary beams produced in collisions at the interaction points will be significantly higher than previously experienced. [...]

The Gamma Factory Project at CERN: a New Generation of Research Tools Made of Light / Gamma Factory Working Group Collaboration
The Gamma Factory project offers the possibility of creating novel re- search tools by producing relativistic beams of highly ionised atoms in CERN’s accelerator complex and exciting their atomic degrees of freedom by lasers to produce strongly collimated high-energy photon beams. Inten- sity of such beams would exceed by several orders of magnitude the ones offered by the presently operating light sources, in the particularly interest- ing energy domain from about 100 keV to above 400 MeV. Gamma Factory for CERN initiative - progress report / Dutheil, Yann (CERN) ; Abramov, Andrey (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Alden, Siobhan (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Alemany Fernandez, Reyes (CERN) ; Antsiferov, Pavel (Troitsk, IZMIRAN) ; Apyan, Armen (NAS Armenia, Yerevan) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Bessonov, Evgeny (Lebedev Inst.) ; Biancacci, Nicolo (CERN) ; Bieron, Jacek (Jagiellonian U.) et al.
The Gamma Factory (GF) initiative proposes to use partially stripped ion (PSI) beams as drivers of a new type of high-intensity and high-energy (0.1–400 MeV) photon source. As part of the ongoing Physics Beyond Collider studies, initial beam tests were carried out in 2017 and 2018 at the SPS and LHC with partially stripped xenon and lead beams [...]

Run 2 Collimation Overview / Fuster Martinez, N. (CERN ; Padua U.) ; Di Castro, M. (CERN) ; Fiascari, M (CERN) ; Fomin, A (CERN ; Kharkov, KIPT) et al.
The LHC collimation system is designed to provide protection against regular and abnormal losses in order to reduce the risk of quenches of the superconducting magnets as well as the background in the experiments. All Run 2 proton and ion runs were successfully completed with no magnet quenches from slow losses of the circulating beam. [...]

In view of the smaller physical apertures of Nb3Sn magnets for the HE-LHC study, a machine study was performed in the LHC to tighten correspondingly the ring and injection protection collimators and measure the change in loss behaviour. [...]
