Proton-Nucleus Collisions at the LHC: Scientific Opportunities and Requirements / Salgado, C.A. (Santiago de Compostela U.) ; Alvarez-Muniz, J. (Santiago de Compostela U.) ; Arleo, F. (Annecy, LAPTH) ; Armesto, N. (Santiago de Compostela U.) ; Botje, M. (NIKHEF, Amsterdam) ; Cacciari, M. (Paris U., VI-VII) ; Campbell, J. (Fermilab) ; Carli, C. (CERN) ; Cole, B. (Columbia U.) ; D'Enterria, D. (CERN ; ICREA, Barcelona) et al.
Proton-nucleus (p+A) collisions have long been recognized as a crucial component of the physics programme with nuclear beams at high energies, in particular for their reference role to interpret and understand nucleus-nucleus data as well as for their potential to elucidate the partonic structure of matter at low parton fractional momenta (small-x). Here, we summarize the main motivations that make a proton-nucleus run a decisive ingredient for a successful heavy-ion programme at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and we present unique scientific opportunities arising from these collisions. We discuss the physics of large impact parameter interactions at the LHC: ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs). The dominant processes in UPCs are photon-nucleon (nucleus) interactions. [...]

Dilepton pair production at the LHC / Hencken, K (Inst. fur Phys., Basel Univ., Switzerland)
We discuss a number of aspects of lepton pair production, especially electron-positron pair production in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions at the LHC. The strong fields of the two ions interacting for a very short time, lead to large cross sections and also new phenomena in these collisions..

Workshops focus on photon-hadron collisions / Hencken, K ; White, S
As Well as taking proton-proton and heavy-ion physics into a new energy regime, CERN's LHC will produce the world's highest-energy photon-hadron interactions, providing a powerful fundamental physics laboratory..

A description and comparison of various commonly used event generators for very energetic hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions is presented together with a description of the ALICE universal output format and some simple examples of how to install and run the programs. This report is intended to provide the necessary information for people who want to know the basic physics behind the various models, run the various generators and analyse the produced output..

Relativistic heavy ion beams are an intense source of ( quasireal) photons with a spectrum extending up to several hundred GeV, due to the high charge Z and the large energy of the ions. In this note we discuss the possibility of using this in peripheral collisions for photon-photon physics. [...]
