A setup for dynamically providing resources of an external, non-dedicated cluster to researchers of the ATLAS and CMS experiments in the WLCG environment is described as it has been realized at the NEMO High Performance Computing cluster at the University of Freiburg. Techniques to provide the full WLCG software environment in a virtual machine image are described. [...]

A Roadmap for HEP Software and Computing R&D for the 2020s / HEP Software Foundation Collaboration
Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. [...]

Measurement of the mass difference between top quark and antiquark in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV / CMS Collaboration
The invariance of the standard model (SM) under the CPT transformation predicts equality of particle and antiparticle masses. This prediction is tested by measuring the mass difference between the top quark and antiquark (Delta m[t] = m[t] - m[t-bar]) that are produced in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, using events with a muon or an electron and at least four jets in the final state. Production of leading charged particles and leading charged-particle jets at small transverse momenta in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV / CMS Collaboration
The per-event yield of the highest transverse momentum charged particle and charged-particle jet, integrated above a given $p_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{min}}$ threshold starting at $p_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{min}} = $ 0.8 and 1 GeV, respectively, is studied in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 TeV. The particles and the jets are measured for absolute pseudorapidities lower than 2.4 and 1.9, respectively. [...]

Parallel track reconstruction in CMS using the cellular automaton approach / Funke, Daniel (Karlsruhe, Inst. Technol.) ; Hauth, Thomas (CERN) ; Innocente, V (CERN) ; Quast, G (Karlsruhe, Inst. Technol.) ; Sanders, P (Karlsruhe, Inst. Technol.) ; Schieferdecker, D (Karlsruhe, Inst. Technol.)
The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a general-purpose particle detector and comprises the largest silicon-based tracking system built to date with 75 million individual readout channels. The precise reconstruction of particle tracks from this tremendous amount of input channels is a compute-intensive task. [...]

Speeding up HEP experiment software with a library of fast and auto-vectorisable mathematical functions / Piparo, Danilo (CERN) ; Innocente, Vincenzo (CERN) ; Hauth, Thomas (CERN)
During the first years of data taking at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the simulation and reconstruction programs of the experiments proved to be extremely resource consuming. In particular, for complex event simulation and reconstruction applications, the impact of evaluating elementary functions on the runtime is sizeable (up to one fourth of the total), with an obvious effect on the power consumption of the hardware dedicated to their execution. Measurement of the differential cross section for top quark pair production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 TeV / CMS Collaboration
The normalized differential cross section for top quark pair ($ \mathrm{ t \bar{t} } $) production is measured in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the CERN LHC using the CMS detector in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb$^{-1}$. The measurements are performed in the lepton+jets (e/$ \mu $+jets) and in the dilepton (ee, $ \mu \mu $, and e$ \mu $) decay channels. [...]

Angular coefficients of Z bosons produced in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV and decaying to $\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity / CMS Collaboration
Measurements of the five most significant angular coefficients, $A_{0}$ through $A_{4}$, for Z bosons produced in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV and decaying to $\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ are presented as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity of Z boson. The integrated luminosity of the dataset collected with the CMS detector at the LHC corresponds to 19.7 fb$^{-1}$. [...]
