Advanced simulation techniques for Radiation Protection studies at the Large Hadron Collider / Bozzato, Davide (CERN) ; Dyrcz, Patrycja (CERN) ; Froeschl, Robert (CERN) ; Infantino, Angelo (CERN) ; Lorenzon, Tommaso (CERN) ; Tisi, Marco (CERN) ; Vincke, Heinz (CERN)
The paper provides an overview of the radiation protection challenges and the advanced simulation techniques used to study and plan complex interventions in radiation areas at CERN, particularly with regard to the Large Hadron Collider. The operational radiation protection aspects are supported by state of the art simulations by means of the FLUKA Monte Carlo code and estimates obtained via several tools, used within the CERN Radiation Protection group, such as ActiWiz, SESAME, and the Fluence Conversion Coefficients (FCC) method which extend the built-in FLUKA capabilities. Radiological Characterization with a Fluence Conversion Coefficients–Based Method: A Practical Example of the Preparatory Studies to the Pilot Beam at the CERN Large Hadron Collider / Bozzato, Davide (CERN) ; Froeschl, Robert (CERN)
At high-energy accelerator facilities like the ones that are part of the accelerator complex at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Monte Carlo radiation transport codes are widely employed to face the challenges of estimating radionuclide production yields and activities with the aim of performing the radiological characterization of activated components. Indeed, it is of paramount importance to ensure adequate radiation protection during scheduled maintenance, transport, and handling of these components and to establish their proper disposal pathway once they ultimately reach the end of their useful life. Multiequipment Radiation Measurements in a Field Generated by Bombarding a 1-GeV/u Fe Beam on a Polyethylene Target at GSI and Comparison to FLUKA Simulations / Mohanan, Sarath Kundumattathil (CERN) ; Boukabache, Hamza (CERN) ; Froeschl, Robert (CERN) ; Horst, Felix (Darmstadt, GSI ; HZDR, Dresden) ; Kozlova, Ekaterina (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Lorenzon, Tommaso (CERN) ; Perrin, Daniel (CERN) ; Sokolov, Alexey (Darmstadt, GSI)
The complex nature of the radiation environment in various high-energy physics facilities necessitates the use of different kinds of radiation monitors. The detectors used could be either passive or active and need dedicated readout electronics. [...]

Measurement and simulations of high-energy neutrons through a various thickness of concrete and steel shields using activation detectors at CHARM and CSBF / Nakao, Noriaki (Tokyo Inst. Tech.) ; Sanami, Toshiya (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Kajimoto, Tsuyoshi (Hiroshima U.) ; Yashima, Hiroshi (Kyoto Sangyo U.) ; Froeschl, Robert (CERN) ; Bozzato, Davide (CERN) ; Iliopoulou, Elpida (CERN) ; Infantino, Angelo (CERN) ; Lee, Eunji (Kyushu U.) ; Oyama, Takahiro (KEK, Tsukuba) et al.
A shielding experiment using activation detectors was performed at the CERN High-energy AcceleRator Mixed-field (CHARM) facility and the CERN Shielding Benchmark Facility (CSBF). The protons (24 GeV/c) were bombarded into a 50-cm-thick copper target, and the released neutrons were transmitted through various shields located vertically upward from the target. [...]

Neutron energy spectra down to thermal energy were measured using a Bonner sphere spectrometer (BSS) for various thicknesses of concrete and steel shielding at the CERN/CHARM facility, where high-energy neutrons were produced by 24-GeV/c protons incident on a thick copper target. The thicknesses of the concrete and steel shielding blocks ranged from 40 cm to 200 cm and from 20 cm to 80 cm, respectively. [...]

Absolute calibration of BSI monitors in the SPS North Area at CERN / Parsons França, Luana (CERN ; Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Welsch, Carsten (Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Developments in current and future experiments in the SPS North Area (NA) and PS East Area (EA) fixed target beam lines at CERN, including the “Physics Beyond Colliders” (PBC) program, require accurate determination of the number of protons on target (POT). The re-calibration of Beam Secondary Emission Intensity monitors (BSI), recently completed in one of the NA branches, reduced the estimated uncertainty on the absolute POT to a few percent. [...]
