Beam Performance with the LHC Injectors Upgrade / zannini, C (CERN) ; Wegner, R (CERN) ; Vollinger, C (CERN) ; Veness, R (CERN) ; Velotti, F (CERN) ; Sullivan, M (CERN) ; Steerenberg, R (CERN) ; Spierer, A (CERN) ; Skowronski, P (CERN) ; Sito, L (CERN) et al.
The LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project was put in place between 2010 and 2021 to increase the intensity and brightness in the LHC injectors to match the challenging requirements of the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project, while ensuring reliable operation of the injectors complex up to the end of the HL-LHC era (ca. 2040). Automating beam dump failure detection using computer vision / Huhn, Francisco (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Bencini, Vittorio (CERN)
The CERN SPS Beam Dump System (SBDS) is responsible for disposing the beam in the SPS in case of any machine malfunctioning or end of cycled operation. This is achieved by the actuation of kicker magnets with predefined pulses, which aim to: i) deviate the beam towards the absorber block (TIDVG); ii) dilute the particle density. Evidently, a malfunction of this system may have negative consequences, such as the absorber block degrading if the beam is not sufficiently diluted, unwanted activation of the surroundings or even damage to the vacuum chamber in case of complete failure.By leveraging a combination of real images from a beam screen device and data from simulations, we train an online monitoring system to identify potential failures of the SBDS from real-time images. The LHC as FCC injectors / Benedikt, Michael (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN)
The re-use of the modified LHC is presently the reference baseline for the High Energy Booster (HEB) injector into the FCC-hh hadron collider, although a number of other promising options exist. As part of the FCC study, the transformation of the LHC into the last acceleration stage into the new collider has been investigated in some detail, including the key aspects of new insertion designs and faster ramping. Fortune Telling or Physics Prediction? Deep Learning for On-Line Kicker Temperature Forecasting / Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Barnes, Michael (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Revuelta, Irene (CERN)
The injection kicker system MKP of the Super Proton Synchrotron SPS at CERN is composed of 4 kicker tanks. The MKP-L tank provides additional kick needed to inject 26 GeV Large Hadron Collider LHC 25 ns type beams. [...]

Implementation of a Tune Sweep Slow Extraction with Constant Optics at MedAustron / Arrutia Sota, Pablo Andreas (CERN) ; Burrows, Philip (JAI, UK) ; De Franco, Andrea (QST, Rokkasho Fusion Inst.) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Kuehteubl, Florian (EBG MedAustron) ; Pivi, Mauro (MedAustron) ; Prokopovich, Dale (MedAustron) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN)
Conventional slow extraction driven by a tune sweep perturbs the optics and changes the presentation of the beam separatrix to the extraction septum during the spill. The constant optics slow extraction (COSE) technique, recently developed and deployed operationally at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron to reduce beam loss on the extraction septum, was implemented at MedAustron to facilitate extraction with a tune sweep of operational beam quality. Automated Intensity Optimisation Using Reinforcement Learning at LEIR / Madysa, Nico (CERN) ; Alemany-Fernández, Reyes (CERN) ; Biancacci, Nicolo (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN)
High intensities in the CERN Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) are achieved by stacking up to seven consecutive multi-turn injections from Linac3. Two inclined septa combined with a collapsing horizontal orbit bump allow a 6-D phase space painting via a linearly ramped mean momentum along the Linac3 pulse and injection at high dispersion. [...]

Exploitation of Crystal Shadowing via Multi-Crystal Array, Optimisers and Reinforcement Learning / Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Gilardoni, Simone (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Matheson, Eloise (CERN)
The CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) routinely delivers proton and heavy ion beams to the North experimental Area (NA) in the form of 4.8 s spills. To produce such a long flux of particles, resonant third integer slow extraction is used, which, by design, foresees primary beam lost on the electrostatic septum wires to separate circulating from extracted beam. Overview of the Machine Learning and Numerical Optimiser Applications on Beam Transfer Systems for LHC and Its Injectors / Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Barnes, Michael (CERN) ; Carlier, Etienne (CERN) ; Dutheil, Yann (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Magnin, Nicolas (CERN) ; Ramjiawan, Rebecca (CERN) ; Renner, Elisabeth (CERN) ; Van Trappen, Pieter (CERN) et al.
Machine learning and numerical optimisation algorithms are getting more and more popular in the accelerator physics community and, thanks to the computing power available, their application in daily operation more likely. In the CERN accelerator complex, and specifically on the beam transfer systems, many promising exploitation of these numerical tools have been put in place in the last years. [...]

Achievements and Performance Prospects of the Upgraded LHC Injectors / Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Albright, Simon (CERN) ; Alemany-Fernández, Reyes (CERN) ; Angoletta, Maria Elena (CERN) ; Antoniou, Fanouria (CERN) ; Argyropoulos, Theodoros (CERN) ; Asvesta, Foteini (CERN) ; Balhan, Bruno (CERN) ; Barnes, Michael (CERN) ; Barrientos, Diego (CERN) et al.
To provide HL-LHC performance, the CERN LHC injector chain underwent a major upgrade during an almost 2-year-long shutdown. In the first half of 2021 the injectors were gradually re-started with the aim to reach at least pre-shutdown parameters for LHC as well as for fixed target beams. [...]
