Beam coupling impedance of the main extraction kickers in the CERN PS / Neroni, M (CERN ; U. Rome La Sapienza (main)) ; Barnes, M J (CERN) ; Lasheen, A (CERN) ; Mostacci, A (U. Rome La Sapienza (main)) ; Popovic, B (Argonne) ; Vollinger, C (CERN)
In view of the High Luminosity (HL) upgrade of the LHC, thebeam intensity must be doubled in the injector chain. To performreliable beam dynamics simulations, the beam coupling impedance inthe injectors, such as the Proton Synchrotron (PS), must be followedclosely by including all contributing elements into the impedancemodel. Some of the elements of the LHC injection and extraction systems will be upgraded or replaced to adapt to the increased beam brightness and intensity of the HL-LHC beams [1; 2]. The injection main protection absorber will be replaced with new hardware which will be able to absorb and withstand 288 HL-LHC bunches in case of an injection kicker failure. [...]

(CERN) ; Bell, B. (TRIUMF ; McGill U., Montreal (main)) ; Bidinosti, C.P. (Winnipeg U. ; Manitoba U.) ; Bylinsky, Y. (TRIUMF) ; Chak, J. (TRIUMF) ; Das, M. (Manitoba U.) ; Davis, C.A. (TRIUMF) et al.
A fast-switching, high-repetition-rate magnet and power supply have been developed for and operated at TRIUMF, to deliver a proton beam to the new ultracold neutron (UCN) facility. The facility possesses unique operational requirements: a time-averaged beam current of 40~$\mu$A with the ability to switch the beam on or off for several minutes. [...]

Operational experience of a low beam coupling impedance injection kicker magnet for the CERN SPS ring / Barnes, M J (CERN) ; Bartmann, W (CERN) ; Díaz, M (CERN) ; Ducimetière, L (CERN) ; Favia, G (CERN) ; Feliciano, L (CERN) ; Kramer, T (CERN) ; Namora, V (CERN) ; Standen, D (CERN) ; Stadlbauer, T (CERN) et al.
The CERN SPS injection kicker magnets (MKP) were developed in the 1970's, before beam power deposition was considered an issue. There are two types of these magnets in the SPS: MKP-S (small aperture) and MKP-L (large aperture) versions. [...]

Design of a new CERN SPS injection system via numerical optimisation / Waagaard, E (CERN) ; Barnes, M J (CERN) ; Bartmann, W (CERN) ; Bencini, V (CERN) ; Borburgh, J (CERN) ; Ducimetière, L S (CERN) ; Kramer, T (CERN) ; Stadlbauer, T (CERN) ; Trubacova, P (CERN) ; Velotti, F M (CERN)
The Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) injection system plays a fundamental role to preserve the quality of injected high-brightness beams for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) physics program and to maintain the maximum storable intensity. The present system is the result of years of upgrades and patches of a system not conceived for such intensities and beam qualities. [...]

A Saturable Pulse Transformer Based on Nanocrystalline Magnetic Cores for an Adjustable Nanosecond High-Voltage Generator / Degnon, Mawuena R ; Gusev, Anton I ; de Ferron, Antoine Silvestre ; Pecastaing, Laurent ; Baranov, Aleksandr ; Mielot, Christophe ; Boisne, Sébastien ; Barnes, Michael J (CERN) ; Senaj, Viliam (CERN) ; Kramer, Thomas (CERN) et al.
This article is devoted to saturable pulse transformers (SPTs), combining the functions of a pulse transformer and a magnetic switch. Two nanocrystalline magnetic cores are investigated in the SPT of an inductive energy storage (IES) pulsed power system based on a semiconductor opening switch (SOS). [...]

Improvements of a Branch Module for an Inductive Voltage Adder Based on Measurements and Circuit Simulations / Ruf, J (CERN) ; Barnes, M J (CERN) ; Kramer, T (CERN) ; Sack, M (KIT, Karlsruhe)
For future upgrades of some CERN kicker systems, doubling of the driving current by replacing a matched impedance by a short circuit termination is of interest, because it allows a doubling of the kick strength, without an increase in magnet length or generator voltage. Therefore, for driving kicker magnets featuring a short-circuit termination, a novel approach for a pulse generator architecture based on an inductive voltage adder is currently being investigated. Measurements on a 12.5/17.5 kV Inductive Adder with Extremely High Stability for the Damping Ring Kickers of the Compact Linear Collider at CERN / Holma, Janne (CELLS - ALBA, LLS ; CERN) ; Barnes, Michael J (CERN)
The specifications for the kicker systems for the Compact Linear Collider call for 900 ns duration pulses of ±12.5/±17.5 kV, of up to 433 A, with combined ripple and droop of not more than ±0.02% at 12.5 kV. Measured pulse waveforms of 12.5/17.5 kV prototypes have demonstrated ±0.02%/±0.2% relative waveform stability, respectively. [...]

At CERN pulse generators based on Thyratron switches and SF6 gas filled pulse forming lines, used for driving kicker magnets, are to be replaced with semiconductor technology. Preliminary investigations show the inductive voltage adder is suitable as a pulse generator for this application. [...]
