Overview of beam intensity issues and mitigations in the CERN-SPS fast wire scanners / Veness, Raymond (CERN) ; Guerrero, Ana (CERN) ; Perez Fontenla, Ana Teresa (CERN) ; Harrison, Anthony (CERN) ; Salvant, Benoit (CERN) ; Zannini, Carlo (CERN) ; Antuono, Chiara (CERN) ; Vollinger, Christine (CERN) ; de la Fuente, Elena (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) et al.
A new design of fast wire scanner was installed in the CERN injector complex as part of the upgrades linked to the High-Luminosity LHC Project. Initial operations with these beams were good, but during the planned intensity ramp-up one early 2023, all four SPS scanners failed at the same time. [...]

Impedance and thermal studies of the CERN SPS wire scanners and mitigation of wire heating / de la Fuente, Elena (CERN) ; Papazoglou, I (CERN) ; Sito, Leonardo (CERN) ; Andreazza, William (CERN) ; Antuono, Chiara (CERN) ; Bruchon, N (CERN) ; Calaga, Rama (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Emery, J (CERN) ; Harrison, Anthony (CERN) et al.
All wires of the four CERN SPS rotational wirescanners broke when increasing the beam intensity towards the target for the LHC Injector Upgrade in 2023. Impedance and thermal studies were immediately launched, with simulations and measurements indicating that beam induced heating from resonant modes on the thin wire could be sufficient to cause these breakages. [...]

Simulated impact of the HL-LHC beam on a graphite target / Hjelle, Ingrid (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN ; Rome U.) ; Piccini, Audrey (CERN) ; Wiesner, Christoph (CERN) ; Wollmann, Daniel (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Heron, John (CERN) ; Pasquali, Michele (CERN)
In the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) era, the intensity of the circulating bunches will increase to 2.2e+11 protons per bunch, almost twice the nominal LHC value. Besides detailed studies of known and new failure cases for HL-LHC, it is also required to investigate failures beyond nominal design. [...]

Collimation of 400 MJ Beams at the LHC: The First Step Towards the HL-LHC Era / Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Abramov, Andrey (CERN) ; Baillard, Dylan (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cai, Rongrong (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Giacomel, Lorenzo (CERN) ; Hermes, Pascal (CERN) et al.
An important upgrade programme is planned for the collimation system of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in order to meet the challenges of the upcoming High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project. A first stage of the HL-LHC upgrade was already deployed during the last LHC Long Shutdown, offering important improvements of the collimation cleaning, a significant reduction of the impedance contribution and better cleaning of collisional debris, in particular for ion-ion collisions. Investigation of Dynamic Fracture Behavior of Graphite / Peroni, Lorenzo (Polytech. Turin) ; Scapin, Martina (Polytech. Turin) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Mariani, Nicola (CERN)
The strain-rate sensitivity of brittle materials, such as glass, ceramics or concrete-like materials, is usually easier to be performed in compression. However, also the tensile behavior, which affects phenomena such as spalling, scabbing and fragmentation, has to be investigated to achieve an exhaustive characterization. [...]

Beam-Beam Long-Range Compensators employing current-carrying wires are considered as valuable options in hadron colliders to increase dynamic aperture at small crossing angles. This paper presents a simple design proposal for application at CERN LHC. [...]

Wave-particle interactions in copper diamond / Portelli, Marcus (Malta U.) ; Pasquali, Michele (Rome U.) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Mollicone, Pierluigi (Malta U.) ; Sammut, Nicholas (Malta U.)
In the context of wave propagation in solids caused by particle-matter interactions, the composite structure of copper diamond is believed to have a significant impact on the material’s response. This limits the accuracy of isotropic homogeneous elastic and elastic-plastic models used in earlier studies modeling the material’s behavior under such conditions. [...]

A closed loop system to control transverse deformations in LHC collimators / Furness, Thomas (Huddersfield U.) ; Fletcher, Simon (Huddersfield U.) ; Williamson, James (Huddersfield U.) ; Martin, Haydn (Huddersfield U.) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Pasquali, Michele (Rome U.)
This work presents a novel closed-loop control system for the detection and control of thermal deformations integrated in the secondary collimators of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Interactions between spurious particles lost transversally from the circulating beam core and the collimator jaws that make up the active area of the collimator will result in thermally induced deformations in those jaws. Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors as Beam-Induced Heating Monitor for the Central Beam Pipe of CMS / Fienga, Francesco (U. Naples (main) ; CERN) ; Beni, Noemi (CERN ; Debrecen, Inst. Nucl. Naples (main)) ; Marrazzo, Vincenzo Romano (CERN ; U. Naples (main)) ; Salvant, Benoit (CERN) ; Sito, Leonardo (CERN ; U. Naples (main)) et al.
The passage of a high-intensity particle beam inside accelerator components generates heating, potentially leading to degradation of the accelerator performance or damage to the component itself. It is therefore essential to monitor such beam-induced heating in accelerators. [...]

Study of Hydrodynamic-Tunnelling Effects Induced by High-Energy Proton Beams in Graphite / Wiesner, Christoph (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Don, Jeppe (CERN) ; Kolthoff, Inken (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Rasile, Silvio (CERN) ; Wollmann, Daniel (CERN)
The design and assessment of machine-protection systems for existing and future high-energy accelerators comprises the study of accidental beam impact on machine elements. In case of a direct impact of a large number of high-energy particle bunches in one location, the damage range in the material is significantly increased due to an effect known as hydrodynamic tunnelling.
