Profile

In 1615, the Tokugawa Shogunate prohibited Christianity throughout Japan and ordered all missionaries to leave the country. Some stayed, went into hiding, and continued to minister covertly to the Christians of Japan. In 1622, 56 missionaries and the lay people who had assisted them were publicly executed for their faith.
