A lot of online slots have been based around the idea of being out in space, but Booming Games' Galactic Speedway slot puts a different twist on the idea by focusing on big-time racing in space. The graphics put you straight into the cockpit of a high-tech space racepod, and you'll see high-quality graphics on transparent reels in front of you with the vast depths of space behind.
Layout and Format
The layout here is a little different than most slots. Instead of using a 5x3 format, you'll have four reels and four rows of symbols. There are 16 paylines that go from left to right as well, and that leads to some uneven bet sizes since you'll pick a coin size to wager per spin. The coins start as low as $0.03 apiece, and that means the minimum bet size is $0.48 per spin. You can wager as much as $48 per spin with the maximum coin values of $3, so even though the bet sizes amount to pretty uneven numbers, there's still a pretty significant range of available bet sizes for players at a variety of stakes.
All of the wins in this game are based on a multiple of your coin size. The Wild Rocket Symbol
The rocket symbol is the wild in this game, and that makes perfect sense considering it's based around a space motif. It appears on every reel to give you chances to hit bigger and better winning combinations. It does not get its own payouts, so four of a kind will give you the 25x win that you'd get for four of the top-paying regular symbol. This wild will substitute for any regular-paying symbols, but it will not substitute for the special bonus symbol or for the scattered free spins symbol.
Rotator Feature and Star Symbols
The star symbol is one of the two bonus symbols in this game. Two or more will launch the Rotator Feature, and this is based on the device that potential astronauts (and sometimes pilots) sit in that will spin them around very quickly to help them learn how to deal with the jerk and acceleration that comes along with the job. Important Wins and Payouts
The biggest win in the game is for four of the space-traveling car symbol, which is the race pod that you're actually sitting in during gameplay. The red double-booster rocket symbol gets you an 8x win for four of a kind, and it's one of the only top symbols that will not get you a win for just two of a kind. Four of the lazer blaster pays 10x, and four of the swirling red star symbol pays out 4x for four on a payline. You can also win 7.5x for four of the space bike.
Lower-tier wins include 3.75x for four of a kind of either the space jacket or the space glasses. A payout of 2.5x is yours for four of the blue swirling star symbol on a payline, and four of either the red or purple sun will pay a simple 1x win.
In Summary
For the Galactic Speedway slot, Booming Games chose an interesting twist on the space theme, and they followed that up with a different approach to the video slot format than what we normally see with their 4x4 layout. These two aspects with the visuals and gameplay combine in a pretty solid way, and the graphics in particular are of a style that works really well for the space racing theme.
With all of that having been said, there are negatives to this game as well. The uneven bet sizes will probably be off-putting for a lot of players, and there aren't really a lot of features that stand out as being something different that takes advantage of or incorporates the theme. There was a lot of potential here to do something really neat, but it wasn't used.
