This study aims to establish and design effective methods to conserve two Bedouin dyed textile ob... more This study aims to establish and design effective methods to conserve two Bedouin dyed textile objects selected from the museum of Jordanian heritage and to improve the physical and environmental conditions in which items are kept to optimize their long-term chances of survival. The conservation processes that were used in conservation of the selected objects can be used a guide for conservators to conserve other similar textile objects. Investigations and analysis were used to identify the fibers and the extent of deterioration by using noninvasive methods. Transmitted Light Microscopy (TLM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy associated with EDAX (SEM-EDAX) were used for identifying the fibers and the deterioration. The results showed that the textile artifacts studied were very dirty, had white spots occupying cavities and holes, wrinkles and creases, fiber damages. Previous damage may due to the improper display methods in the museum or due to the incompatible environmental conditions surrounded the artifacts during exhibition such as: light, temperature, relative humidity, pollutants and microorganisms. For these reasons, the textile objects were cleaned using wet cleaning methods that improved the physical and mechanical properties of textile objects and returned them to their original shape as much as possible. Then the textile objects were mounted and supported by stitching on to backing fabric stretched on wooden frames. Finally, and according to the requirements of the museum, the objects were displayed temporarily inside showcases in an aesthetically pleasing manner.

Technical and analytical investigations were carried out on an overhead mask of woman cartonnage ... more Technical and analytical investigations were carried out on an overhead mask of woman cartonnage from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo (catalogue 33279), which dated back to the Greco-Roman Period. Various non-invasive techniques were used in this study such as: AutoCAD program, multispectral imaging with Ultraviolet and Infrared Rays, optical microscope, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The structure of the cartonnage was unique and consisted of three distinctive layers, from the bottom to the top; a double layer from linen, a calcite-based plaster layer, and finally a polychrome paint layer. The study of the paint layer revealed the presence of blue, red, white, yellow, orange, brown and black pigments. Yellow color was identified as orpiment (As2S3) and yellow ochre (goethite α-FeO.OH + clay minerals) and blue as Egyptian blue (CaCuSi4O10). The selected corroded silver coins used in this study have been excavated from burial soil in Najran excavation site where there were more than 2500 rare coins dating back to pre-Islamic eras.. Laser cleaning tests were performed on 2 different types of corroded coins using a Q-switched Nd: YAG laser at 1064 nm. LIBS diagnostics was used to monitor the laser ablation process during the removal of different kinds of corrosion products with the aim of stopping the process once the cleaned surface is reached. The indigo dyed linen textiles are one of the most popular textiles in most of historical periods... more The indigo dyed linen textiles are one of the most popular textiles in most of historical periods in the Egyptian civilization. This study aims to investigate the role of indigo dye in preventing, reducing or inhibiting the deterioration of ancient Egyptian linen textiles. In this study linen textiles were experimentally dyed by indigo dye. Undyed and dyed linen were artificially aged by light, heat, soil and fungi. The change in the physical and chemical properties of the undyed and indigo-dyed linen textiles after being artificially aged were determined by various methods such as tensile strength and elongation, the crystallinity index (CrI) by using X-ray diffraction, the surface morphology by using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and spectrophotometric measurements of the colour were calculated. The results confirm that indigo dye inhibits and reduces the deterioration of linen textiles. These results confirm that indigo dyed linen textiles are more durable than undyed ones. ...

ABSTRACT In this work microemulsion copolymers having different composition ratios of methyl meth... more ABSTRACT In this work microemulsion copolymers having different composition ratios of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) were prepared using ultrasonic initiation system in presence of sodium luaryl sulphate (SLS) as an emulsifier. The obtained copolymers were characterized using FTIR, morphological and particle size analysis using atomic force microscope (AFM), differential scanning calorimetry, (DSC), X-ray analysis and rheological properties. The results showed that the prepared microemulsion lattices having nano-sized diameter ranged between 40-115 nm. Increasing HEMA content in the feed comonomer composition (0-25%) was accompanied by increasing particle size diameter and solution viscosities while, the glass transition temperature was decreased. Ultrasonic wave propagation has been studied using pulse-echo method at a frequency of 2 MHz. The ultrasonic velocities (longitudinal & transverse) and density have been used to calculate the elastic moduli at different concentrations. The ultrasonic absorption coefficient has been also measured. Various ultrasonic parameters have been computed from the experimental values. The variations of ultrasonic absorption coefficient, adiabatic compressibility, acoustic impedance and free length show that these parameters affected with monomer feed compositions but the variation is slightly non-linear. Ultrasonic viscosity values of the prepared microemulsion latex have been determined and the obtained data was compared with that obtained using coaxial-cylinder method. The results concern a variety of selected topics critically presented. The topics touch on the cultural astronomy, the ancient textiles and masonries and the physico-chemical and biological investigations, the socio-political issues of Egyptian Ramesside era, revisiting the inscription of an Egyptian statuette, and the valuable information extracted from rock graffiti in north Kharga, Egypt.

Nano polymers used in this study are microemulsion polymers prepared from Methyl methacrylate (MMA) and Hydroxy ethyl methacrylate (HEMA) monomers using Eco-friendly initiation system represented as ultrasonic mechanism. Wool textile samples were treated with different types of prepared nano polymers, to evaluate the long-term effect of these polymers on the physical and chemical properties of these materials. Two different types of accelerated ageing methods, heat and light were used in this evaluation. The change of the physical and chemical properties of the untreated and treated wool textiles after ageing was assessed by different methods.
